So last month, I created a little terrium for insects. I've wanted insects for a while now, but they often require heating lamps, special food etc, so I decided to aquire some for free.

Meet my isopods. I started off with about eight or nine and now I've got over thirty, these little wonder balls! They are prolific.

Many people see them as horrid little things. But the humble woodlice have been a must in human history and the world's history.

They are actually classed as crustaceans, their ancestors coming from the sea millions of years ago and some still live there today as giant isopods. They are closely related to crabs and lobsters. However they are the only ones to fully conquer the land! With 14 legs, it's rather easy

Munching on dead wood, rotten leaves and anything else that finds its way to the forest floor, the woodlice is part of nature's clean up crew, munching its way to a clean and tidy (if small patch) neighbourhood.

They are also a living family unit! They love nothing more than to snuggle up with other woodlice and the females even take care of their young!

So the next time you see a woodlice, don't squish it, help it save your planet by putting it in a leaf pile or in the dirt and munch its way to victory!
