A steward was a servant to a high-ranking officer. Their duties would include washing and mending clothes, serving meals, and keeping the officers’ cabins tidy. The captain's steward oversees the cook and has charge of the pantry, from which every one, even the first lieutenant or chief mate, is excluded.

A seaman who has at least more than two years of experience at the sea is known as an able seaman or able-bodied seaman (AB). The ABs operated and maintained the ship and are tasked with standing guard and taking up a duty-post near the helm. They are also expected to be experts in life-threatening and rough weather situations.

Each ship is appointed a senior surgeon and an assistant surgeon, who both carry the rank of junior wardroom officers. Ships' surgeons are responsible for the general health of the crew, especially against known arctic ailments like scurvy. It was common for at least one surgeon in expeditions to also double as a naturalist. Surgeon-scientists carried out geological and biological research whilst on the ship.

Under each captain are three lieutenants per ship. Lieutenants typically came into their commissions from lives of privilege, and therefore generally knew less about actual sailing than the masters and seamen. Promotion in the navy was slow during peace time, and junior officers like lieutenants saw the discovery service as their ticket to advancement.

The wardroom table includes the vessel's two highest-ranking non-military sailors: the ice master, responsible for managing conditions specific to polar sailing; and the second master, in charge of the more general sailing of the vessel. Masters gained their experience from military expeditions and whaling ships.

Between the officers and the crew are the royal marines. They ensured the security of the ship's officers and supported their maintenance of discipline in the ship's crew. Marines assigned to ships are usually conscripts, and are not entitled to bonus or advanced pay.
