Sure, he was the "man" in their relationship (though that could be debatable) and if he wanted to be extremely sexist and stereotypical, he could have said that it was his job to be the breadwinner, but that really had nothing to do with it - it had more to do with the fact that Alex had never expressed a want or a need to work, and Malcolm really wasn't the type of person to push her into doing something that she so obviously didn't want to. Also, somehow, Malcolm didn't think that any job that Alex took would last very long - she would probably let her temper get the best of her. And honestly? Honestly, he didn't mind so much - her not working - because it always meant that he could come home to her, to a warm house, and a girl that he loved.

His keys locked in the door as he clicked it open and pushed his way through into their old, familiar apartment. The buzz of the TV echoed faintly in the background as he shrugged off his shoes, loosened his tie, and looked around, slightly hunched over with exhaustion, and made his way over to a pile of clothes that were slumped over the floor. It was dusty. He would have to wash the floor later.
