It is a moth! It's a sphinx moth, which in general tend to be pretty large. This friend specifically is a tersa sphinx :)

Tersa Sphinx (Xylophanes tersa), taken August 25, 2024, in Georgia, US

This is about the only sphinx moth I can ID from memory, which is kind of sad, but I don't see many of them so I have no reason to become better at ID! I happened to look down while perusing the grasses at the edge of a creek and saw this guy hanging about. This species is gorgeous, and I especially love the orange stripes on its shoulders. Hopefully I find more this year, though larger moths tend to elude me!

From the sphingidae family. They have a wingspan of 60-80 mm. They can be found throughout North America and Central America, as well as some parts of South America.

Tersa sphinx? Spotted by chance as with most bugs i find, the best picture i could get lest scaring the babe off.

Pupa Unboxing: Tersa Sphinx

The first pupa unboxing video is up! This is the Tersa Sphinx. Remember the caterpillar [link]?

My camera set-up is not designed to take video of me fiddling with bugs and talking about them, so my first two of these is my disembodied hands/arms moving the pupae out of focus constantly (sorry!)

I am hoping to have the Imperial moth video up soon!

@kit-kit-kat submitted: This lovely moth flew around for a few minutes before clinging to the top of this mesh and just stopping. It didn't move for about 10 minutes and i thought it was dead(and already devising plans to take it home for display). It was pretty much unresponsive, it let me get really close for the picture. But suddenly a lizard came and it flew off!! Would you have any idea what this moth is and what it was doing? The way the light shines through it's wings is especially pretty. I live in [removed ](remove location please)

Lovely photo! Love the lighting. It's a tersa sphinx. Nocturnal bugs will often rest during the day in something similar to sleep where they're harder to "wake up." But of course they're still aware of their surroundings so they can escape predators! As this one did. Sorry to the lizard but he'll have to get a meal elsewhere :)
