Trigun Stargaze: On Tesla and Nai
TRIGUN STARGAZE EP 4 SPOILERS!
This episode delivered what I consider to be, so far, the most emotional, powerful, goosebump, chilling, devastating scene in the whole remake.
And, surprisingly, it's not about Vash and Nai.
It's about Tesla and Nai, and it's built in such a beautiful manner.
Midvalley wandering what does Knives think and dream of, and once more we go back to the twins playing the piano together, so we initially think "ah yes, of course Nai would dream of Vash" - except there's someone else, symbolically sitting between them.
Tesla is Nai, and Nai is Tesla:
And when Tesla is scared and screams for help, that's what makes Nai move for the first time in two years, he's coming to save her, to avenge her.
The juxtaposition of Tesla and Nai made my jaw drop, it's so visceral and really hits you right in the feelings: Nai absorbed her eye*, her memories and feelings and Tesla has kept on living within him for 150 years.
Which means Nai likely spent his entire life reliving Tesla's moments of pain and fear; the screams of her sister fueling his rage, his revenge against humans, his own fear of ending up like her, just another prey of human cruelty - and maybe even more than what he lets on with Vash, with the "I did this all for your".
Yes, but maybe not only.
He did it all for Tesla. Again.
And I think that's beautiful.
*It's nice how tristamp/trigaze Tesla has Knives' eyes/skin colour and Vash's hair colour: it's as if she split into the twins, her legacy lives on with the baby brothers she never got to meet 💔
