Blue, blue, blue. My firings are still full of kitchen tiles (two more kiln loads I think.) But a girl can’t live off tiles alone. I’m finding a corner or two for little cups and tea bowls. These are from yesterday’s firing. My son bought me a pint of @coyoteclayandcolor Orion for Christmas. He made sure it was something I didn’t have, and researched what cone I used. So sweet. I’m testing it here under Blue Purple as a way to slow the runny glaze and prevent it from dripping onto the carved area. It is a very submissive glaze, basically disappearing except the bottom edge. But that bit that shows is really cool. A pop of violet, and then mottled, mossy greens and brown. (Orion is blues and browns alone, so the glaze combo is changing the color.) Unexpected, but very welcome result. 💙 These will be listed in the shop this morning. . . . #blue #testtiles #pottery #ceramica #potteryofinstagram #potterylove #imadethis #etsyhandmade #etsypottery #etsymudteam #clayartsutah #lithologyceramicart https://www.instagram.com/p/CpksOM1J0-6/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Every January is all about testing and experimenting with new glazes and techniques... love how these test glazes came out in this morning’s firing! A lot of potential here! I did commit the cardinal sin of not fully labeling what I tested, so I will have to guess (bangs head against the wall) 🙈 #oops #whattheheckamilookingat #glazetests #glazechemistry #testtiles #ceramics #pottery #brownclay #chocolateclay #potterslife https://www.instagram.com/p/B7t_bqOgLCO/?igshid=1vmj3n8v0dl63
From @suemcleodceramics who is always sharing glaze info! • • • • • Yesterday's post showed how a glaze applies differently when you have different water content (different specific gravities). 🤓 This post shows the difference before and after flocculating a glaze with Epsom salts. Both of these samples have the exact same amount of water (Specific gravity = 1.48). 🤓 Before the Epsom salts are added (left tile) the glaze is milky thin, the particles move freely past one another and don't stick well to the test tile. 🤓 When the glaze is flocculated with Epsom salts (right tile) the glaze is thicker in the bucket, the particles stick to each other and stick better to the test tile, giving a thicker layer. 🤓 The glaze also takes a bit longer to dry which allows for a smoother, even coat. 🤓 Flocculation and water content both affect how a glaze will apply. Every glaze will have different characteristics. It's good to get to know how all your glazes work so you can make them work the way you want. 🤓 . . . . . #testtiles #glazes #ceramicglaze #glazechemistry #glazetesting #glazetests #flocculation #flocculants #specificgravity #viscosity #understandingglazes #howglazeswork #glazeconsistency #glazeapplication #glazeworkshop #glazeworkshops #canadianceramics #yyjpottery #yyjceramics #vancouverislandpottery #potterymaking #ceramics #pottery #glaze https://www.instagram.com/p/BtpJ-qYhzbc/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1x7qcy81arx2o
A few more test tiles for this weekend. The last set showed some nice results with the Hanson 5x20 at cone ten so it’s time to see what it looks like over the underglazes. I’ve been looking for a decent clear glaze that is less finicky than my leach clear and will allow me to just do a simple dip instead of having to spray on the clear. While at it I found that some of the other cone 6 glazes I used also did well at ten, now to see how they look layered over each other. Hopefully they come out well and will add to the overall aesthetics of my work. #studio #testing #testtiles #cone10 #reduction #makergonnamake https://www.instagram.com/p/BxzasCqAWRg/?igshid=1h7zpzptmfzah

Contemplating colour. Here are some test tiles of clay slips. I only mix small amounts of slip at a time, and sometimes struggle to recreate a colour. Which might seem silly, but is the way a prefer to work, with editions of colour. #colouredslips #stain #illustratedceramics #studio #testtiles #sgraffito #lustre #pollyfern
