San Diego police said two people aboard the aircraft were killed and eight others were injured. No serious injuries were reported among residents on the ground.
The impact caused what authorities described as a “direct hit” to multiple houses, igniting roughly 15 homes and several parked vehicles. Fire crews contained the resulting blazes after large columns of smoke drifted over the area, and residents along several blocks were evacuated as a precaution.
Flight-tracking data indicate the jet departed Teterboro, New Jersey, stopped briefly in Wichita, Kansas, and was on approach to Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport when it went down about 1.5 miles short of the runway. The aircraft, which can seat eight to ten people, encountered thick fog that reduced visibility to roughly half a mile, according to the National Weather Service. Investigators have not yet determined whether weather was a contributing factor.
