EV Tour Diaries: On The Train To Chittagong
June 12, 2019 There are times when one year crosses over to another without much fanfare. January 1, quickly becomes Dec 31 and we are sometimes left pondering how soon time flies. But 2020 has flipped our lives over, not just in Bangladesh, but all over the world. For the Tanguar Racing team, our calendar begins and ends on June 12, because on this day we set forth for a journey of a life time. One year ago, we did think of writing our memories sometime in the future, but now thanks to the COVID-19 crisis, it seems we lived in a parallel world and that our Bangladesh EV Tour happened really really long ago. However, we will try to recollect some of our memories and put some of those in words.
We start with a fun moment, and that was loading our vehicle onto the vehicle carrying carriage of Bangladesh Railway. It was a first time experience for our team members, and Tauseef is seen here really happy after successfully loading the vehicle. It took a while however. We arrived around 10am in the morning. Our railway contact was a really old man named Ali Bhai. Unfortunately as we regret it now, we never took a picture with him and now wonder how he is doing during this criss. He suggested we should get our own train tickets while we waited to load the car. Luckily we had booked a sleeper cabin a few days in advance (and there’s a funny story here which we can maybe keep a later post). Tauseef went ahead to complete that and it took almost a little above an hour to get the tickets. Gopal in the meantime spent time checking and re-checking the vehicle. He also prepped the cameras for video. It was an activity that would continue throughout our journey. We always had to prep and unprep the car, but this time it felt even more awkward as there onlookers. As soon as the tickets were done, we were asked to pay our fees. Up until this point, we had assumed it was going to be a really complicated process. The process is fairly simple. Describe the goods (in our case a car), mention destination, pay the fees and take receipt. Ofcourse after this was the haggling and justification why we need to pay an additional BDT 5000 to Ali Bhai. According to him, he “ensured” that we were in the front of the carriage! True to his word, when we went load, we were! Everything was done by about 2pm..an almost 4 hour process! Check out our video here:
The second part takes place about 10 hours later at Uttara Airport Railway Station. Needless to say, all we did until getting onboard the train was refresh our GPS app every 5 minutes! It was really cool to see the train moving on the map! Train? On GPS? Nope. It was the GPS from our vehicle which we had installed just 2 days before the trip began! Months of planning, and we almost forgot such a crucial component!
Gopal can be seen here, also super happy guarding our essentials. All those bags were our most crucial and valuable companions (One of which we lost and another one we almost lost towards the end of whole trip). Our 4 cameras, 1 laptop, 1 drone, clothes, money, team banner, emergency food. We’d spent the next 1 hour or so waiting for the train. I was almost sure the nightly mail train would be super late, but luckily, it was only maybe 30 or 40 minutes late. After boarding the train, we spent about 1 hour organising and foolishly record some inspirational speeches. Those videos as we now realise are just meant for our own fun. Maybe we will share them several years later! That’s all, and stay connected as we write down some more of our memories from the Bangladesh EV Tour 2019!
