Ever since the Texas fires in the US, an image has stuck with me I decided to draw. I drew this more as impression art vs. realism as this was a satellite view of a few cows that were left in a burnt field. Someone provided them hay, as evident by the barely visible tracks on the right. I can’t help wonder: there are 5 cows - where are the rest - dead? And the lone cow looking up like what happened? I drew this because animals can’t speak for themselves but a picture tells a thousand words. I know a lot of people lost their homes and livelihood, and these cows lost their homes and food source too. Many ranchers lost their hay and grain in the fire and unable to feed any remaining cows they may have. Maybe it’s because I live around cows and while not the smartest, they do have feelings- ever heard a mother cow cry when her calf was taken to market? They are pack animals and will follow weather and know where to go in a storm, but where would they go in an inferno surrounded by fences they can’t get through? The news speaks of price hikes in beef due to this, but not about the loss of animal life. I just think it’s so sad all the cows who lost their lives to this fire, not to mention the ranchers who lost their investment. It was my hope this piece brings some awareness of how devastating fires can be to animals as well as people. I call this “Surviving Desolation”.
