I’m grateful for this meal. We were one of the fortunate ones with power and water during this Texas storm. We only lacked internet and cell phone signal. I was able to go to the store and grab whatever meat was left which was pork chops and a family package of steaks. The Lake of Lost and Broken Dream
Squeaks of the buggies proved that the floors were spotless.
Sure one wheel would roll a different direction than the others, but it still kept on rollin’.
It is unusually busy today.
Moms and dads are strollin’ by, yelling at their kids to slow down as they try to catch up.
One little boy wants a Spider-man backpack to go with his matching shoes.
His mom glances at the price tag before nodding, eliciting happiness from the little boy and a teeth showin’ smile.
Then there are the two teenage girls watching the cute guy at the cash register as he scans other customers items.
They’re pretending to look at clothes, but with each giggle that falls from their lips, that mickey mouse shirt they’ve been holding for the last couple of minutes is the last of their concerns.
Then there is the young family with their newborn baby boy. He has a cap on that’s too big for his small little head. Both his mom and dad preoccupied with giggles as their son gives them a little smirk. The mother’s hand dives down to pinch his full rosy cheeks.
As registers ding with every purchase and buggy’s squeak as they’re being pushed, people are thinking about what the rest of their day has in store.
The little boy will go home and fill his backpack up with all his new supplies, maybe try on his new matching shoes, excited for the school year because he wants to grow up to be an astronaut.
The two teenage girls will finally work up the courage to say “hi” to the cute boy at the cash register before going home to apply to their dream school. They are planning to study mechanical engineering and come up with inventions to help our sea from being swallowed by plastic.
The baby boy will lay between his parents tonight in complete warmth and softness after a long bath. His parents hope he sleeps through the night with no interruptions.

The dings of the registers have stopped…
The squeaks of the buggies have come to a halt…
The air has been sabotaged by fear and hatred.
It has become polluted in a blink of an eye.
Crimson eyes show no mercy… no love… no compassion. Just hatred… but why?

Minutes… minutes that felt like eons pass. It has finally stopped but it… it didn’t stop soon enough.
The Spider-Man backpack… it is laying on its front, away from the little astronaut boy who would have shown it off to the world with his joyous and accomplished smile. If only Spider-man jumped out of that backpack…
The teenage girl will no longer share endless nights with her best friend talking about the things they would’ve accomplished, the inventions they could have brought to life, about their dreams, their futures at Uni. Not even gush about the cute boy at the cash register, who is still hiding under it.
The baby boy… he will get to go home. He will get to enjoy another hot bath. But he will now have to do it without the love and warmth and delicacy of his parents. The young mother bravely and lovingly, for one last time, embraced him tightly in her warmth, with all her strength as the bullets pierced her body while the father shielded them, holding them one last time.
The once squeaky floors were now a lake of what could have beens. It is a lake of all the dreams and all the afternoons and nights and life of the people who had plenty left.

That is how many dreams filled up the already overflowing lake that has a constant faucet that pours out red dreams. Destroyed red dreams.
The dreams we will never have the pleasure of seeing bloom slowly.
However, as the lake of lost dreams is being washed away, their spirit will float to a river of love and happiness. This river does not flood. The water will not be red, but clear. So clear that you’ll be able to see the long green plants swaying on the riverbed. Their dreams were cut short, but they will never leave the heart of those that loved and will always love them the most.
Instead of laying in a red lake of lost and broken dreams, they will freely float in the transparent river filled with true love, with no pain or sorrow, just love.

Why write this? Well, because I can relate; I go to Walmart when I’m bored, I go to the bar to get out of my bubble, I go to school because I want to be an English teacher and move abroad to teach English and I want to write a book. I have goals and I have dreams like everyone in this world. Like everyone at that bar, at that Walmart, and at that festival. Anyway, this is dedicated to El Paso and anyone who finds comfort in it. I mean no disrespect to anyone.
