Iron Head Baker plays Black Betty An old chain gang song, Black Betty has a double meaning to the convicts who originally sang the tune. The first was of the Black Maria a penitentiary wagon which transported prisoners to work sites. The second meaning refers to a long leather strop at the end of a pole which was used to beat prisoners. This Black Betty was said to cause prisoners to jump inches off the ground when it hit their backs, it is probably the inspiration for the response Blam-Ba-Lam
