Willis Alan Ramsey - "The Ballad of Spider John"

Another deep cut on a recent mix tape from Stu called the Leaves tape.  This tragic ballad with quiet acoustic guitar, soft whining horn, and touches of church organ always makes me stop and listen.  Someone once said to me, "You don't have to be tragic," but we are all tragic.  Our mortality makes us so.  You can't know pleasure without pain, and between the two is a fine line. 

"Ol' Spider John the robber man--long, tall and handsome..."  We've all known a Spider John, and something in us is as cavalier as he is.  In the end, it is our hearts with which we can't help but be cavalier.
