MISTAKE-noun-an error in action...
I made a mistake, not my first, certainly not my last, perhaps one of my most embarrassing…Texting. Texting has taken the place of actually talking to people; we’re constantly texting. So I was texting, to my friend, a text about another person, who we both have a bit of an issue with, not that the person I was texting about was aware of the issue, which was one of the issues my friend and I were having; this person not realizing there was an issue seemed well, stupid in our minds, because in our minds the issue was clear and obvious, and why this person didn’t get it was a topic for conversation. There was also a feeling that this person was way too smug, and my friend and I don’t do smug. So after this person sent me what I thought to be a rather smug text, I decided to forward the text to my friend with a comment, or two, maybe three, of my own, regarding the forwarded text. I knew she’d appreciate it, and that it would give her a chuckle. (And isn’t it a nice thing to do; to make someone smile?) So I sent my text…to the person it was about.
I realized my mistake the second I hit ‘send’…There was nothing to do but call the person and admit my mistake. I apologized profusely and quite sincerely; it was never my intention to hurt this person. (Hello! The text wasn’t meant to be seen by her.) Our conversation was awkward at first, (ya think?) but after a few minutes, it became clear that we both had misconceptions about the issue, and that we both had misjudged the situation, our reaction to the situation, and each other, and pretty much everything. The truth is, if I hadn’t sent the text to the wrong person, we both would have continued misjudging, misreading, and misunderstanding, so, my mistake was a good thing...
I think we ended the conversation on good terms. Talking, we were able to work things out, something we never could have done by texting. Texting is good, but as we both discovered, too often can be misinterpreted. I think from now on, when in doubt, I’ll call, and definitely, if I text, I’ll see that it is being sent to the right person.
