For those new to the Welsh language, we have several different dialects within Wales which means certain words are spelt or pronounced differently depending on where you're from - or they're just totally different words!

Officially I think there's about four or five officially recognised dialects, but it essentially boils down to the North/South divide, also known as Gog/Hwntw, with Gog being short for Gogledd (meaning North), and Hwntw being used to mean South but literally translating into 'over yonder'.

I'm Gog through and through, but I try to use some south Walian words occasionally, just because I'm aware that the majority of dysgwyr Cymraeg following this blog learn the southern dialect and I want to make my translations accessible.

"So which words are differe-?" OH GOOD I THOUGHT YOU'D NEVER ASK. Here's some of my favourite examples:

It/him:

North: o, fo South: e, fe

Milk

North: Llefrith South: Llaeth

Cash

North: Prês (brass) South: Arian (silver)

Now

North: Rŵan South: Nawr

Yes, it's the same word spelt in reverse. Both dialects will use this as proof that the other is 'backwards' and therefore wrong. All I'll say is: don't listen to the hwntws.

Cais cyfieithu: Mutuals!

Reit, bois. Mae 'mutuals' yn cael ei ddefnyddio'n aml iawn ar Tumblr ac ar-lein yn gyffredinol, ond dydy'r gair ddim yn cyfieithu'n hawdd i'r Gymraeg. Dyma rai opsiynnau:

Cyd-ddilynwyr (co-followers). Dilynwyr sy'n dilyn eu gilydd!

Dilynwyr cyffredin (mutual followers). Dyma'r cyfieithiad orau, ond mae'r gair 'cyffredin' hefyd yn gallu golygu 'normal', ac oes unrhyw beth normal am fod ar Tumblr?

Cyfeillion (chums). Ond ydy mutuals wastad yn ffrindiau? Hefyd, dydy'r gair ddim wir yn cyfleu'r natur 'ar-lein' o fod yn mutual gyda rhywun.

Cymrodorion (comrades). Fel yr uchod, ond yn fwy comiwnyddol (ac felly yn fwy Tumblr!).

Miwtiwals (mutuals). Casáu Cymreigio geiriau Saesneg, ond efallai'n opsiwn?

Beth mae pawb yn ei feddwl? O hyn o bryd, dwi'n meddwl na cyd-ddilynwyr sydd orau, ond hoffwn glywed barn eraill!

Reit, bois. Dwi'n mwynhau'r broses o drio gweithio allan sut i gyfieithu bratiaith Saesneg i'r Gymraeg (ee. fuckass → ffwciedig), ond un gair sy'n achosi trafferth yw 'bitches'. Yn amlwg mae 'geist' yn bodoli fel cyfieithiad uniongyrchol, ond dydy o ddim yn teimlo'r un peth.

O hyn o bryd dwi'n meddwl defnyddio 'genod', sef 'merched' yn nhafodiaith y gogledd. Mae rhywbeth amdano fo'n teimlo'n fwy anffurfiol na 'merched', ac felly mae'n cyfleu'r teimlad digrif yn well.

(Nodyn: dwi'n cyfeirio at y ffordd mae 'bitches' yn cael ei ddefnyddio i gyfeirio at bobl yn gyffredinol yn yr un ffordd a 'dudes', nid mewn ffordd sarhaus.)

General gist of this post in English: I want to translate posts using the word 'bitch' or 'bitches' (used generally, not offensively) but can't figure out an ideal word that conveys the same vibe without using the Welsh word for female unspayed dogs, which ain't the vibe. Send help.
