Both Spies take showers that are either colder than the Arctic Ocean or hotter than Satan's asshole. Although Spy has had to ease off on the extreme temperatures ever since his incident with Medic.
Both have a lot of old fake names from their previous spy activities. Red makes it a point to give a different one every time somebody asks his name, he thinks it's so funny to confuse his teammates. Blue has only told Engineer, Scout and Medic his real name so far, but some of the fake ones have stuck, particularly René which he finds kinda ironic.
Both can whistle. Red whistles like a Disney princess while Blue uses it mostly to get others’ attention when he can't yell.
Both are introverts, but neither hate being around people. They will get snippy if they don’t get alone time though.
Both love telling stories about their past. Usually random anecdotes, but occasionally something more meaningful if you read between the lines.
Originally the disguise kit didn't change one's voice to match. Red just has a killer impression of everyone. Blue has struggled with it in the past, since he isn't as good at voice acting.
Both have a very high pain tolerance, which they usually put to good use on missions. But since they are perfectly capable of going until they are literally unconscious Medic or the Engies sometimes need to step in.
Both have done fencing in the past, and recently revived the hobby. They kick each other's asses in roughly equal measure, during training and it has become a fun activity for them both.
They both have a ridiculously high tolerance to spicy foods. Though Spy unfortunately tends to get coughing fits from them nowadays.
RED Spy
Name: François Pierre Laurent
Fake Names: Gabriel, Jean, Robert, Gérard
Age: 51
Birthday: May 19
Sexuality: Straight (probably Bi but never dated a man)
Nicknames: Red (Spy), Frenchie (Soldier),
Fears: Acrophobia (fear of heights), particularly triggered by cliffs
Health: Lots of scars from before and after the Gravel Wars.
François deeply regrets abandoning the love of his life and their unborn son. He considers it to be his biggest mistake, and even though she has forgiven him, he's scared of what Scout will think if he tells him.
He is a trick stabby bastard. He’s quite athletic and a bit faster than Blue, he’s a fan of parkour and enjoys messing with people by always finding new angles they aren’t expecting.
Spy is very hard on everyone when it comes to job performance. But he doesn't demand anything of the others that he doesn't demand of himself. He is his own worst critic, and it makes him come off as an ass towards his teammates.
He loves messing with people's expectations of him. Despite that, he hates it when people say or do things that imply he's heartless.
He's a surprisingly honest person. Outside of his job and a few sensitive topics he'll usually answer well intentioned questions.
Spy can speak Spanish, Catalan, French and English fluently. He can kinda understand some Russian due to Heavy and he can understand most spoken German due to the war, but he doesn’t speak it fluently. He’d like to learn both though.
He likes sewing and altered all his suits himself. If anyone dares to make fun of him for it cough Scout he will give them the verbal lashing of the century.
He used to dance ballet until he was around 16 and he retains all of his crazy flexibility.
His fear of cliffs stems from his childhood, when he fell off a cliff by the seaside and got stranded half way down. He's pretty good at managing it for the most part, but it does come to the surface, particularly on ‘maps’ with cliffs.
He's not a fan of physical affection, it's just not his thing. He'll accept it from his loved ones though, even if that list barely makes it to the single digits.
Nothing means more to him than someone taking the time to do things for him, or learn what he likes or needs.
He always gives the most thoughtful gifts and makes a point to never miss a holiday or birthdays. Though he doesn't like others making a big deal of it, so his gifts are usually hidden or untagged.
He cares way more than he lets on, but he doesn't want the others knowing about it. Despite their general trust and camaraderie he doesn't want to give anyone the chance to exploit his ‘weakness’.
He gets dragged into team activities which he usually puts on a show of hating, but he really doesn't mind them that much and is genuinely happy to be included. At this point it would be weird if he didn't show up for a full team hangout.
He plays piano to a very advanced level and accordion to a moderate one. He knows music theory well, he can sight read sheet music and he has perfect pitch.
He loves Classical music, Jazz and most French music.
Relationships
Scouts
Spy's relationship with Scout is complicated to say the least. Spy feels awfully guilty about abandoning Scout and his mother before he was born, and joined team fortress specifically to look out for him. On the other hand Scout can be insufferable at times, and Spy can’t help but critique his poor choices. Not aiding their already bad relationship..
Spy understands why Scout didn’t like him in the beginning. He did spend the better part of a year targeting his father, but Spy does think this amount of rudeness is a bit unwarranted. Things are kinda fine now, at least Scout is less outwardly hostile, but they never interact outside of team business, if they can help it.
Soldiers
Soldier is usually a pain to deal with and the single biggest source of fights and arguments among the team. By extension Spy has to deal with him a lot, much to his annoyance. Spy, however, has gotten pretty good at handling Soldier’s outbursts and Soldier does seem to like him. Only god knows why..
Soldier is more lucid and slightly less paranoid than Soldier, especially when Demo is around. As such they interact far less, and when they do it's usually about strategy or training. Spy was surprised to find that Soldier has quite the mind for strategy and despite his general distrust for Spy, they get along alright.
Pyros
Pyro is very close with Engie and by extension he’s usually around when Spy is talking to Dell. Spy thinks he is odd in various ways, but Pyro seems to like him, and despite his best efforts will not stop hugging him. Spy has accepted it by this point, and as long as no one else is around, he doesn’t mind.
Given the nature of their jobs, Spy wasn’t surprised to find out that Pyro doesn’t like him, he was however surprised to find out why. Pyro is deaf, which is a fact Spy had suspected, but never had confirmed until after the teams joined forces. Spy felt bad for all the times he had taken advantage of that fact, and one of the first things he learned in sign language was how to apologize. Pyro is still weary of him, but things are getting better.
Demos
Spy doesn’t go out of his way to spend time with Demo, as he really isn’t the drinking type. But he will lend an ear from time to time if Tavish has no one else who’s willing to listen to him.
Demo is a party animal and it's usually Spy’s job to keep things from getting completely out of hand. As such they usually have arguments about where the proverbial ‘line’ is, and despite Spy’s general annoyance with Hamish, they actually get along well enough the rest of the time.
Heavys
Spy and Heavy don’t talk much. They occasionally discuss books, outside of official team business, but they don’t spend much time together. Spy doesn’t particularly trust him, but game recognizes game and he can tell that despite his questionable taste in men, the guy is very intelligent.
Heavy was very directly hostile towards Spy in the beginning. Unsurprisingly so, as one of Spy’s favorite disguises was medic, and he’s used it to great effect against all the BLUs but especially against Heavy. Spy has apologized and tried to make amends, in as much as they need to in order to cooperate and to work together, but he understands why Heavy still doesn’t trust him.
Engineers
Spy thought Engineer careless and annoying in the beginning, so he tried his best to avoid him where possible. Though like the true extrovert that he is, Dell always found a way to weasel back into hanging out with Spy. After an incident involving a cliff and the - at the time, experimental tech of the Eureka Effect, they became closer. Engie saved Spy from falling off the cliff and while Spy thought it stupid that Dell would risk his safety like that, he was nonetheless endlessly grateful for his help. They have a brotherly relationship (not that Spy would admit it-), and they work very well together as Captain and Second in command respectively.
Engie is more reserved than Dell, and Spy spent the past 8 years dismantling his nests and generally being a pain for Dan to deal with. Despite it, and much to his surprise, Dan was easy to get along with, especially when he found out what Spy had done for his boyfriend. They see a lot of each other at strategy and other management meetings as Dan is captain of the BLUs. They get along very well.
Medics
Spy doesn’t trust Medic, all the more after the incident with Spy’s head. He’s not rude but he won’t go out of his way to spend time with him.
Medic is a different story. Spy was suspicious of him in the beginning, and vice versa, but he quickly learned that Hanz cares a lot more for his teammates than Herbert does. Spy certainly finds the guy interesting, even if he still has some hard feelings about their past job. They hang out a quite bit, and are learning more about each other, even if it’s slow going.
Snipers
Spy and Sniper get along better than they arguably should. Both being introverts, it took nearly a year before they started talking and they only did after Spy saved Sniper’s ass in the field one time. They bonded over both being skilled assassins and homesick, though in very different ways. They enjoy each other’s company, and Sniper is one of only two people on the team who knows Spy’s real name. They are good friends.
Spy and Sniper don’t spend that much time together, and it's kinda awkward whenever they do since Scout doesn’t like Spy. Nonetheless Spy doesn’t have any issue with Sniper, and he occasionally will join him and Mick when they go shooting.
Spy
At this point they have a mutual understanding; I don't interfere with your business and you don't interfere with mine, which Spy is perfectly happy with.
He is definitely jealous of Spy's great relationship with Scout, and despite Spy's stubborn refusal to admit it he wishes his relationship with his own son was that good. They have a decent friendship by this point, though Spy will joke that they barely tolerate each other.
Miss Pauling
Spy respects the hell out of Miss Pauling. Her job was thankless, and Spy has experience both before and during the gravel wars with managerial tasks. He knows firsthand how hard those types of jobs are, and always made a point to ease her workload whenever he could. This led to a strong mutual respect and eventually a friendship between them.
Nowadays they don’t see each other much, as she’s off looking for the Administrator, but whenever she comes to the base Spy is sure to make her feel welcome.
Janet (Scout’s mom)
Janet is Spy’s love, his darling, his petite chou-fleur. She’s the love of his life and he loves her endlessly, body, mind and soul. He’ll never understand why she took him back after all the hard ache he’s caused her, but he’ll always be grateful.
She isn’t afraid to call him on his bullshit, and she is the only person Spy will always listen to. He trusts her 100%, no questions asked, no explanation needed.
Spy wishes he could see her more often..

BLU Spy
Name: Julien Marcel Amédée
Fake Names: René, Jacques, Pierre, Henri
Age: 50
Birthday: February 29
Sexuality: Bi
Nicknames: Blue (Spy), Pa, Pops, Dad (Scout), René (fake name that stuck),
Fears: Medic, and hurting his loved ones.
Health: Nerve damage, sensitivity to extreme temperatures - especially cold, thermoregulation issues, damaged vocal cords and PTSD. All results of his decapitation. Scars from before and after the Gravel Wars. Reattachment scar across the base of his neck.
Blue prefers using his gun whenever he can. He would rather be farther away from the action as he’s not as good as Red at acting/disguising, he’s pretty good at losing people though.
Blue’s more mellowed out then Red. Now that he has people he knows he can fall back on, who will fight for him and who he’ll fight to protect, he's a bit more relaxed than he used to be. He’s realized life is too short to get hung up on the past. He's also surprisingly playful.
He did competitive ballroom dance when he was younger. He loves dancing and he’s still very good at it. He will use every party as an excuse to show off and have fun with his friends and family.
He's much more desensitized to physical affection than Spy is. Mostly due to Scout, who is rather clingy and Engineer who is a cuddle bug. He doesn't mind it and he likes making his loved ones happy.
He loves spending time with his loved ones and he loves doing things for them. The fastest way to his heart is thoughtful gestures.
Spy can speak Romanian, Italian, French and English fluently. He can also understand quite a bit of German through hanging out with Medic, and some Russian because of Heavy. He also ‘speaks’ sign language decently well
He’s currently learning Spanish from Spy and Dell.
Back when he was recovering from the decapitation incident, he used to mess a lot with his stitches which Medic constantly told him off for. Now that he’s healed it's fine, but he retains the habit of rubbing the area when he’s uncomfortable.
He cares a lot about his teammates. If he thinks someone is upset or acting weird, he will make it his mission to find out what’s wrong and how he can help. It does occasionally piss off his teammates when he’s constantly in their business, but they know he means well.
Because of his weakened immune system, he tends to get really bad colds at least once a season. Like bed bound with a super high fever type of bad. It usually doesn’t last more than 3 or 4 days, but he’s basically a zombie for the duration.
He plays Violin very well and classical guitar well enough. He too knows music theory and he can play piano but he doesn’t like the instrument much.
He loves classical music and anything he can dance to - which is most songs.
Relationships
Scouts
To say Scout dropped a bombshell when he told Spy he was his son is the understatement of the century. Not helped by Scout's timing. He told Spy of their relation the day after he got his head reattached, after spending nearly a month in Medic's fridge.
Spy had no idea he had a kid, let alone that it was Scout, and the whole thing was a gigantic shock. In retrospect, Spy appreciates it. Both that Scout was honest with him and that freaking out about this gave him something else to focus on for those torturous first weeks. Spy loves his doofus son and they have a great relationship nowadays.
The other Scout however…
Spy is glad his son has another friend, and he's happy they're not competing over everything as much anymore. But he can tell Scout is jealous of him and Jamie's relationship. Spy feels kinda awkward around him, especially since he knows who Scout's father is.
Soldiers
Spy doesn’t interact too much with Soldier. Generally he thinks Soldier is an interesting person and they plan training exercises for the team together, but they don’t hang out much other then that.
Soldier on the other hand is a different story. Soldier is a paranoid bastard and he’s always been suspicious of Spy, not that he blames him, but it's made their relationship difficult. They can tolerate each other, but Soldier doesn’t trust Spy and he’s fine with that, as long as it doesn’t impede them on missions.
Pyros
His relationship with Pyro was basically non-existent at first. But after the incident with Medic, much to Spy’s surprise Pyro was super supportive and understanding. It motivated Spy to learn sign language to better communicate with him. Nowadays Spy and Pyro are good friends, they hang out quite a bit and Spy refers to Pyro and Scout collectively as his sons.
Spy’s relationship with Pyro is complicated. By the nature of their jobs they have been at odds since the beginning, and Pyro is very good at his job. However when Spy was in the fridge much to his surprise Pyro was incredibly kind towards him, the three times he saw Pyro. After the teams joined forces Spy made a point to spend time with Pyro and ended up learning a lot about him. They are very close now, and Spy is one of the people Pyro most often turns to.
Demos
Demo is a loud party animal, and Spy doesn't always appreciate the noise. But he is one of the few people on the team who can dance. Whenever Demo is organizing the party Spy is usually gonna be there for the music. They get along well most of the time.
With Demo it's a roll of the die what mood he'll be in, but overall they get along quite well. Spy likes his quieter company and they like sharing stories of home with each other. Spy would consider Demo a friend.
Heavys
Spy hangs out with Heavy in as much as he is around when Spy hangs out with Medic. They don't go out of their way to spend time together much. They occasionally talk about art or music though.
Spy's not very close with Heavy. They talk about books sometimes, but Spy is never gonna be 100% comfortable around him due to his relationship with Medic.
Engineers
Engie is the love of Spy’s life that he never thought he’d find again. Dan was the person who forced Spy to accept his help after he was finally stitched back together following the fridge incident. He stuck by Spy’s side, even when he was difficult to be around, and Spy had to admit that his support meant the world to him.
They have a loving and supportive relationship now. They’ve been through their fair share of struggles together, but no fight could possibly be bigger than what they’ve already endured together.
Spy and Engie and good friends, though it didn’t necessarily start that way. Spy had always assumed that Engie must have had issues with him. After all, they spent the better part of the gravel wars in direct conflict by the nature of their jobs. So when the teams first joined forces Spy was pleasantly surprised to find that Dell was the most openly friendly and willing to help them. He was almost too friendly and understanding.. Spy appreciated his efforts to accommodate his issues with extreme temperatures, but it felt suspicious and off as he didn’t know Engie that well at the time. But Dell was more than willing to let Spy educate him on his conditions and they bonded over their respective disabilities. Engie even showed Spy some accommodations he hadn’t thought of. They’re great friends now.
Medics
Spy has been friends with Medic nearly since the beginning of the Gravel wars. Medic was the first one to accept at face value that Spy didn’t want to reveal his face or divulge his name. Spy found him to be very interesting company, even if he didn’t understand the intricacies of his medical jargon. They only grew closer after they found out the other served in the war too.
After Spy’s beheading and subsequent return, Spy avoided the medical bay as much as humanly possible, as all the sights and smells were very strong reminders of his trauma. But Hanz was more than understanding and their friendship only grew from there. Spy thinks of Haz as a brother now, and they certainly act like it.
Despite Spy’s issues with Medic, he’s always tried to be courteous whenever interaction was impossible to avoid. Nonetheless, Spy avoids him like the absolute plague.
Snipers
Things with Sniper were a bit awkward when Spy accidentally found out he and Scout were dating. Spy played coy to their obvious relationship, thinking that they’d tell him when they were ready. When they did come forward, Sniper was nervous about Spy’s approval, but Spy respects his son’s decision. They’re not super close or anything, but they get along well and Spy is happy for them.
Spy and Sniper don’t interact much. Their jobs brought them into conflict on the battlefield, but they were both quick to move past it. Nowadays they get along alright, but they don’t spend much time together.
Spy
When they first started working together he had expected Spy to hate him, to his surprise Spy didn’t. Red had no problem with him, even though he didn’t forgive him for the photos incident, which Spy thinks is fair.
Spy was surprised to find just how different, and at the same time similar, they both are. Nowadays they get along very well and despite it all, Blue would definitely consider Red a good friend.
Miss Pauling
Spy doesn’t trust Miss Pauling. He now knows that she was unaware of what the Administrator did to get the BLUs here, but she is far too dedicated to the Administrator for Spy to trust her.
heyyy if anyone's interested in engie/medic/spy i got this fic up on ao3. it's mostly engie/spy as a Setup to engie/med/spy but i think it turned out p ok :]
