Nathaniel didn’t expect to run across Wade that day, after all they hadn’t seen each other in a while and as a shitty as it probably was to say it, he’d rather not do that now. Things were... good, for the first time in years if he was being honest, and as much as he enjoyed the other’s company his ‘relationship’ with the younger man had been one of the mistakes he was trying to fix.

He couldn’t ignore him once they spotted each other though, so he smiled politely, fixing his tie and wiping his mouth in a napkin. “Hey, Wade.” He muttered, offering him a seat a second too late, “I... haven’t seen you in a while. Everything okay?”

Nathaniel had barely walked in and he was already pissed. Pissed because his ex-wife ambushed him at the parking lot, because he had to leave work earlier to be at a PTA meeting, because somehow his wife had turned every other parent against him. Still, he forced a smile on his face, walked into the school and tried to avoid the daggers being thrown his way by the other mothers.

He looked around the room, sure he’d met some of these people before, but he cared little to learn their names then and was little pressed to do it now. There was someone he was sure he’d never seen before though, and he’d remember so out of place as that man. He approached him with the same confidence he would an old buddy, strutting across the room like he was above everyone else and like this outsider was the only person interesting enough. It was quite true.

“You’re looking like a fish out of water there.” He commented as he stopped at his side. “I promise they’re not as bad as they look — they’re worse.”
