Hunter makes Surya feel at home. Nothing about him is comforting, but she’s never known a home to be comforting. He is constant, though, which is still a novelty to her. He is the man who has set the standard in her life, whether she realizes it or not. And beyond that, he is the twice-over victor she brought home. He fills her with pride, even if that is often accompanied with lost wishes. He’s the only person whose criticism she fields with sincerity. 

Until six months ago, he was a god to her. A god she helped, but nonetheless still more powerful and ethereal than her. Now, she knows his actions are not without consequences, just as hers aren’t. She’d rather it have been no one else who saw her fresh off her lashing. She could have handled being told she wasn’t a princess from no one else.

Luckily, she’s not hopelessly in love with him. She thought, for a time, she might be, especially after her marriage. But when he lit the Peacekeeper on fire, that was the end of this chapter. He’d fulfilled his role as her prince then, whether she realized it or not. It’s time for him to be her advisor.

Poppy feels like he’s not quite the god she saw him as when she was a kid. He was her aunt’s favorite (maybe still is, Poppy hasn’t kept up), and once upon a time when she was her aunt’s little shadow, it was natural and part of her day to worship Hunter Twill, the fiery Avox who broke the country. He’s still cute, though, and she’s not about to fuck with him to find out if he’s still got what he brought to his arenas.
