The typical greeting of Sawadee pee mai are heard everywhere - which in English means Happy New Year. This period is called Songkran and it's also a huge 3 days water festival and fun. To help the celebrations Thai Silk Magic sponsored a Thai country music show to entertain our village guests who had come from all over Thailand. Thai country music is called "Mor Lum" and the songs are sung in an Isaan dialect - a comination of Thai, Laos and Khumer. Mr. Joerg Todzy had traveled all the way from Melbourne to visit us at Thai Silk Magic and check out our operation. It was very exciting for all of us at Thai silk Magic as this was the very first time one of our Thai silk customers had made the effort to visit our remote Thai silk village. Joerg (pronounced York) not only checked out our handmade Thai silk creations but met with some of our weavers and greatly impressed them by having lunch with them - even eating the spicy salad dishes they had prepared. We are very grateful to Joerg for making a special trip to Thai Silk Magic as we are not exactly located on any tourist route - in fact we are only 20 miles from both the Laos and Cambodian borders. The quick video below shows the celebration and party that takes place with the blessing of a new home in our village. It took 10 workers 2 weeks to build and it may not have all the luxuries often associated with modern city living but it’s safe, sturdy, water and wind proof – with electric power and a reliable water supply. What more could you ask for? The cost of this home was about $6500 and the family can enjoy TV and keep cool with electric fans – very different from their previous home. The weaver who owns this new home, khun Tong, earns about $275 per month weaving Thai silk with Thai Silk Magic and she saved half the costs of their new home in a little over 2 years. Thai Silk Magic, by sharing all profits with our weavers, plays a real part in helping our village to enjoy a better lifestyle. We also helped with the purchase of a new TV and washing machine. With the marketing of our Thai silk everybody is happy as we can share help with lots of improvements.
