Ajith's self-interest or Director's actor?

In a recent interview with the Tamil magazine Ananda Vikatan, Director Gautam Vasudev Menon said that Ajith learned how to box and play guitar for the movie without him asking. ''அந்த அளவுக்கு அஜித்கிட்ட என்ன சேஞ்ச்-ஓவர் பண்ணீங்க?'' ''இதுதான்னு நானா எதுவும் பண்ணச் சொல்லலை. ஆனா, 'ஷூட்டிங் போகலாம்’னு முடிவு எடுத்த நாளில் இருந்து அவரே ஏதேதோ கத்துட்டிருந்தார். 'நான் பாக்ஸிங் கத்துக்கிறேன் கௌதம்’னு ஒருநாள் சொன்னார். 'ஸ்கிரிப்ட்ல அப்படி ஒரு மூட் இருக்கு. பயன்படும்’னு சொன்னேன். திடீர்னு பார்த்தா, 'கிடார் கத்துட்டிருக்கேன். ஒரு பாட்டுல கிடார் வாசிச்சா நல்லா இருக்கும்ல’னு கேட்டார். ஆக்ஷன் ப்ளாக் போறதுக்கு முன்னாடி, ஜிம் போய் ஸ்லிம் ஆகி வந்தார். இது எதுவுமே படத்துக்குத் தேவைப்படலை. ஆனா, இருந்தா நல்லா இருக்கும்னு அவருக்கே தோணிருக்கு. என்ன பண்ணணுமோ, அதை பெர்ஃபெக்ட்டா பண்ணிட்டார்!'' Although this shows Ajith's professional dedication, self interest and personal connection to the character he plays; This also reminds of actor Surya's self initiative to build six pack abs and strenuous makeover for the Father characterization in the movie Vaaranam Aayiram (2008). Either of those were not requested by the director Gautam Menon per the script; but came to the fore because of Surya's self-interest. The six pack abs ended up being one of the many distractions to the movie's screenplay. All the scenes of his training and anecdote of how it changed his life, were not really required for the script and looked simply forced upon. We understand that Ajith is more experienced than Director Gautam Menon in the movie industry and it is understandable that he adds his valuable experience to the character he plays. But still it is always best to be a director's actor.
