Okay, so.
Imagine if you will, some foreign place. There’s an insurmountable evil sweeping the land, but of course the good people are fighting back, because that’s what good people do. A lot of them join the fight officially, and others provide support, maintaining the supply lines and all that while war rages around them, providing the weaker and those unable to fight with some semblance of normalcy.
When the fighting gets close to this one little village, the troops sent to protect it are mostly wiped out, but one guy manages to rally a few together and they go to the village to warn them of what’s coming.
They are taken in by one of the locals who tends to their wounds and helps to mobilize the people for an evacuation.
There’s not time, though, so the guy who led his fellow soldiers decides to be a decoy, to lead the enemy away and stall long enough to hopefully give the people time to get away.
He pulls off his distraction, but by doing so, the enemy knows where he is and they are coming for him. They will reach him and then they will turn and take the town and there’s not much he can do about it.
Except the guy who took him in shows up, and he manages to keep things going, to keep the enemy at bay for hours.
In the end, they can no longer fight, and they sit together in their little hold, waiting for the enemy to reach them, and musing over whether the others were able to get to safety.
They have only known each other for a little over a day, but both soldier and civilian feel like maybe, something could be there. Like maybe, if they could just have more time, even just a few more hours...
They fall.
Mevix comes to in Maldraxxus and he looks among the other new arrivals for the man who died beside him, hoping against hope that maybe they can get their few hours now, with eternity stretching out before them.
Of course his civilian counterpart is not there. He was not a fighter, even if he was impressive as hell for those last few hours.
Time winds on, but Mevix always remembers the brave civilian, the one he died holding hands with, their wounds too much to overcome.
And then one day, when the tides are turning against him and he knows he has been sent on a suicide mission by Vyraz, he hears a voice that he knows, even after all these eons.
And the owner of the voice does not look like the one he died with, but he can see the resemblance in the cheekbones and the jawline, and he knows without a doubt that this is the man he died with, the man he fought to the end with.
And that’s when he decides that he’s not going to die here, in the House of Constructs. They are going to make it this time, and this time, they will get their few hours.
Even if the man goes by Thales now, and even if he doesn’t remember. That’s okay, because after all, they only knew each other for so little a while.
And Mevix can remember for both of them.
