20. “I think you’d be safer here, with the others.”
Peter took a moment to survey the scene. Admittedly, things were not good.
A week ago, he’d volunteered to help Juno track down the ones behind a string of robberies that had left the banks, jewelry stores, and museums of Hyperion City reeling. He thought it’d be simple enough with Juno’s detective mind and Peter’s expertise in the thieving profession, but as things have a tendency to do everything soon went wrong.
Peter’s cover was blown too soon, and when Juno tried to move in on the robbers he was wounded and a hostage situation was started. Peter had been able to take down a few of the robbers before the others retreated with a few hostages further into the museum. Now he was left with a handful of scared tourists and a detective that was bleeding out and trying to hide it with an arm held tight around his stomach.
“They’re going for the diamond,” Peter said, twirling his knives in deft fingers. “Once they have it they won’t need those hostages anymore.”
“Well then let’s quit wasting time and go,” Juno said, pushing past Peter. He made it a few steps before a hand grabbed his wrist and stopped him in his tracks.
“Juno... actually I...” Peter hesitated a moment, wondering if there was a way he could say this that would convince Juno to stay without any arguing. “I think you’d be safer here, with the others.”
“Nureyev, we don’t have time for this,” Juno said, pulling his wrist away.
“Exactly. You were shot, you’re going to slow me down and I can’t save those people if I’m worried about you,” Peter said. Juno looked up and saw a sort of fierce concern in Nureyev’s eyes. He knew there was no scenario in which Peter was going to let him tag along.
Juno sighed, shoulders sagging. “... okay.”
“Thank you, Juno. I’ll be quick I promise.” Peter pressed a kiss into Juno’s hair. “Stay with the others, stay safe. I love you.”
“... love you too,” Juno muttered, feeling useless as Nureyev went off to face the danger alone.
