He was testing his limits; in fact, he had already blown way past what the changeling normally could accomplish, in about an hour. But Batman didn't want your limit when he knew there was another tenfold there.
The green boy was frustrated, angry, exhausted, and most of all, determined. It was one of the qualities about him that made Bruce so interested in him- so invested that, he can do, he should do, he will do, and by god, Bruce was going to get it from him.
Currently, he had the boy running an obstacle type of setup, one that tested all terrains for each animal he could think of. Gully's, hogbacks, lagoons, rapids, sand hills, desert pavements,dry lakes,Glaciers, crater lakes, etc. The ever changing landscape would change as he completed each one;
and so far, he was up to 47.
He had joked about it being tough at about 5.Made a comment about getting something to eat about 17.Shredded part of his arm at 21, and after Bruce had patched him, he had told him to do it again.He had said he had enough at 36.He wasn't kidding at 41.He stopped asking for breaks at 45.
He could see it in the lines of his face as he sprung up the strength to transform his tiny figure into an enormous pterodactyl, flying and dodging away from the projectiles Batman was giving him.
But his form couldn't stay, and in mid air he fell, fell so hard, transforming on his way to greet the earth back into his regular human form.
Batman caught him in his arms, and laid him down on the ground, as the boy wheezed, mud and blood, sweat and tears littered his face. Batman picked him back up, and began to walk towards the med bay.
"Your timing on transformations could improve,' he said, cradling the boy in his arms. He reminded him so much of a young protege of his. 'You're 0.67 mili seconds off. Those ticks could be the difference between life and death." He heard the boy groan, too weak to respond otherwise.
"But there was improvement. And don't tell me there wasn't."
As he layed the boy down and hooked him up to a few machines to monitor him,Bruce looked the boy straight in the eye.
"Next time you tell me you can't do something, I will prove you wrong. Next time someone tells you you're too young, too inexperienced, too inexperienced, you prove them wrong. You are a great asset to your Team. Don't let someone tell you otherwise."
Seeing everything was in order, he let Beast Boy rest.
