'what are u going to do stab me?'
❝ have you even taken the time to let yourself feel it? everything that’s been happening. eventually, you have to slow down and let it feel real. ❞ ( to thatch from marco ! )

Waking up in the infirmary was never Thatch's favorite thing. It had happened a time or two in his career as a pirate but not for a long time. He was a Division Commander for the Whitebeard Pirates. He was one of the top members of a Yonko crew.
But he was only human.
He was lucky to be alive. He knew this. If the wound had been an inch to the left or even just a little deeper? He'd be dead. If someone hadn't stumbled upon the scene when they heard Thatch shout? He'd be gone. So many little moments added up for him to live but without just a single one? He wouldn't be here.
But Thatch wasn't one to sit around when there was work to be done. The day he was cleared for 'light duty', he was back to work. He was aware of his siblings watching his every move, ready to step in if need be but he ignored them as much as one could ignore hundreds of people. This had been tough on everyone, not just him and he knew this. But he had to focus on himself right now. His division was good but there were some things he had to do himself. He couldn't put off his duties forever. He didn't want to.
So here he was, sitting on the floor of the pantry with his breathing ragged and teeth clenched. One simple slip had knocked the air from his lungs and someone had gone to find Marco. In any other circumstance, Thatch would be ecstatic to see the older man but he was so. damn. tired. He loved Marco but he wasn't sure he could stand being looked at right now.
"Marco, I don't want to feel it," He sounded tired. Someone he had known for years and had considered a brother had tried to kill him. They had fought side by side for years. None of them had ever imagined anything like this happening. "I'm going to have to live with the threat of him coming back to kill me to get the fruit so can't I have a few more days? I want to focus on work. I want things to be normal again. I want Ace back but the kid is too damned stubborn to listen to any of us."
"Gods," His voice was thick with unshed tears. "All this over a damn fruit. I would've given it to him if he'd just asked..."
@summerxmelodies asked: ❛ what are you smiling at? ❜ (Thatch) (welcome back!) | 𝟐𝟎𝟎 𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐃𝐎𝐌 𝐃𝐈𝐀𝐋𝐎𝐆𝐔𝐄 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐌𝐏𝐓𝐒
"Can a man not smile for no reason?" Thatch asked, a wide grin on his face. Truly there was no reason for him to have such a good mood - that's just how he was. He had no reason not to be like this.
Then a thought crossed his mind.
"Ah, sorry, I wasn't smiling at you. Apologies if I made you uncomfortable."
❝ with a smile like that, i can’t help but want to know your secret. what’s got you so cheery today? ❞ / for Thatch pleasee

Thatch was having a good day. He could admit that much.
The day had started off easy, with no problems while he and his division did their duties for the day, and that carried on even once his work was done. Prep and cleanup had seemed to speed by and soon he was left with nothing to do.
It was rare with a crew this large for him to get any downtime and so he planned to enjoy every second of it. He had been debating going to bother one of the other commanders when Ace found him first. Perfect.
"I'm just in a good mood," Thatch said, looking at Ace from the corner of his eyes. "But what about you? You seem pretty cheery yourself."

Thatch frowned at Ace, concern written on every inch of his face. He knew the younger man was set on beating Pops, Ace was nothing if not determined it seemed, but he couldn’t help but worry. No, Ace wasn’t a member of the crew yet. Yes, that was the Captain of the Whitebeard Pirates he was attacking at least once a day.
What could Thatch say? He liked the kid’s spirit.
“You didn’t come to the mess hall during meal time,” Thatch forced himself to smile, to seem approachable. Even if Ace decided not to join the crew, which Pops was very insistent on, Thatch wanted him to be comfortable during his time there. And the first step of that was making sure the kid actually ate.
Wouldn’t do to have him starve before he even healed up first.
“I can leave it here so you can eat it later?”

Normally, when the Whitebeard Pirates came across another crew, or even just the odd, lone individual it wouldn't be long before they realized who they were dealing with. He wasn't being arrogant or anything. It was just a fact. People knew who they were and often acted a certain way, good or bad.
They were not.
The bar he and a few members of his division had claimed as theirs for the night had been mostly empty when they arrived. The only person who didn't clear out as fast as possible was by themself and muttering under their breath. That itself wasn't odd. But the way they ignored all of the group? Not looking up? Not even pausing to see who had entered when the room suddenly filled with the sound of scraping chairs and coins clattering against the countertop?
Thatch couldn't help but think that the person in front of him was strange. And considering who he counted amongst his crew, his family, that was saying something.
"You make a habit of talking to yourself in seedy bars?" He chuckled, sitting up properly to give them his full attention. "If it makes you feel any better, I didn't actually hear anything you said."
