❛ do you remember anything? at all? ❜ @ sabo

Fate had led to this meeting and he might be thankful once he worked past the nausea. The mission was supposed to be simple: visit on an island that had been discussing separating from the World Government and report why contact had ceased. He hadn’t known what he would find when he arrived but it certainly wasn’t this.
The man sitting across from him kept in frozen in place with just a stare. Everyone else had left the room, leaving just the two of them, but he could still feel them hovering just outside the door despite the dark haired man taking all of his attention. The conversation between them seemed to take one twist after another.
The man, Ace he reminded himself, had said they knew each other, had grown up together. They had thought he was dead.
He remembered heat. Fire. Smoke. The breeze from the ocean catching it and making it spread. He remembered being afraid. The sound of wood splintering. The pain. He thought he was going to die.
Sabo had no idea what to do with his hands. With each statement, he could feel them shake more and more until it was everything he could do to keep from clenching hard enough to draw blood. He wished someone else was here with him. Koala, Hack, anyone from the Revolutionary Army, his brothers-
Brothers? I have brothers. Ace is-!
He could see the light through the leaves, the light leaving dappled patterns on their skin. Ace’s sharp eyes curved to show that he was smiling. His freckles darkening in the constant sun. The other little boy stuck to their sides, usually literally stuck to them. His smile brighter than anything Sabo could remember seeing since. Their laughter was loud in the forest. They were happy.
“Right?” Sabo asked, feeling more hopeful than he had in the years since he woke up in the infirmary. “Me, you, and Luffy… we’re brothers, right?”
