#tbt Conversations about intersectionality over last weekend’s Women’s Wave had me thinking - I had been asked on different occasions if #BloodyGirlGang was going to be part of _________ event becos “your brand looks like a good fit” “they are advocating women empowerment and that’s totally BGG” “I love BGG’s voice and style, are you going to make more products?” Yes.... and no. In 2018 I had reached out, applied to these Bay Area events, put $$ in to be a vendor and had either been rejected, ignored or marginalized. #thatmarginalizedthing What I’ve noticed when visiting some of them in person is that they’re predominantly white and according to 2015 census of the Bay Area’s demographic, White: 53.6% (non-Hispanic: 41%). So where are the rest of 46.4% representations of #WOC ? 🤷🏻‍♀️ Bay Area! We can do better!! What’s 2019 for BGG? I’ve to admit there was contemplation if I should share this #bestofnine2018 post due to the fact that 3 images were not original content of mine. Imposter syndrome? Some disappointment that I (that face in the middle of the grid) did not produce enough original content with the #BloodyGirlGang brand but was also happy to share others’ work that I had admired and loved with our followers - Community over Competition 🧡 Ultimately it came down to transparency and being unapologetic are values BGG is about. Plus its an accountability to myself for the new year. To make BETTER original content and also to continue celebrating other wonderful women who indirectly contributed to this page 😘. 2018 - was a rollercoaster ride and definitely a learning experience. Most proud that y’all liked the work I put out and your support for BGG 🥰 THANK YOU!! I got to meet so many new friends and worked with amazing human beings. Downside - I learnt first hand while there are sweet beings like @wildandkindstudio 💚 there are also some that prioritize the “feminist movement” as a corporate/marketing/get famous tool and are often superficial and essentially meaningless in their claims of supporting the voices of ALL WOMXN - a women of color artist like myself is often just a tokenism or simply muted. Do not refer to me as “a fan” when we agreed it was a collaboration for “women empowerment” by throwing a couple of popular hashtags suggestions for me to draw pro-bono, that’s essentially co-opting my work to promote your own voices. #thatmarginalizedthing While the problem has persisted for decades, it now has a name: “white feminism”. White feminists may understand the importance of intersectionality in theory, but some fail to act on it in practice. . That really got me to rethink the mission statement behind this passion project - I MUST take a stronger stand in celebrating diversity, women of color in my work and all those who fall outside the narrow privileged identity particularly on this stolen land! .
