For a brief moment, I considered making our plucky city-levelling protagonist a kaiju. It wasn't just a GIANTMONSTERSOHBOY kind of decision, either. My main concern was having a main character people would empathize with, and quite frankly, featureless mechanical mockeries of the human form tend to not be great for that sort of thing.

More broadly, you could probably argue that the question of empathy for either character comes down to a fundamental discussion of the respective places of technology and nature in modern society. But that's mostly because I'm in a degree program, and that's the sort of thing one says in a degree program.

Anyway, I like giant robots better, so giant robot it is! Q.E.D.
