As I write this, the idea for this story has been rattling around my skull for all of two weeks. I’ll be honest, it’s unusual for me to work on projects that quickly. This one felt different. There was a sense of immediacy. I could do this right now, so why the hell not? I’m done school. Nothing is stopping me.

So here’s the deal; this isn’t the full thing. The full story, God’s Country proper, will be much longer. This just gives you an idea of what to expect, without giving anything away about most of the plot.

With regards to when it would be done, I can’t really say. Sitting around waiting for “the right time” to do anything, though, won’t get me anywhere. That said, I’m giving very careful consideration to distribution and, yes, cost. I do plan to make a living off art. This almost certainly wouldn’t be good enough on its own; I’m thinking about a Patreon and a web comic, not publishing a hardcover (yet), but every little bit helps.

So! Here’s God’s Country. I hope you enjoy it, and if you do, stay tuned. Things are going to happen. Somehow.

I said I would do the thing, and lo, the thing has been done. I envisage these as being spaced out over about 20 years, with the first one being ‘lil baby Bruce taking his first few stabs at viligantehood in 1992, and the most recent suit coming into service in 2011. Those are the years Batman: The Animated Series and the New 52 reboot started, respectively.

I see young Bruce as confident to the point of being foolhardy, so he forgoes most body armour for the first few years. This does have the advantage of not hindering his agility. He’d spend a couple weeks, a month at most, angrily beating up Gotham’s criminal underbelly before realizing he’s going to need a psychological edge on top of his physical one if he’s going to make any real progress.

Now, in the months leading up to Bruce’s return to Gotham, news stories started coming out about this guy from Metropolis. Flashy costume, flashier name, but there’s an idea there, and it strikes a note with Bruce. The standard bat-crashes-into-father’s-study scene applies (I like the one from Batman: Year One, personally), Bruce has his epiphany. He becomes the Batman.

As time passes, more and more near-misses and serious injuries lead Batman to build armour into successive iterations of the suit, just keeping pace with new developments from Wayne Enterprises’ material science division. And occasionally, Lexcorp’s and S.T.A.R Labs’. While the suit becomes heavier, he also becomes stronger: age and injury forcing him to rely increasingly on physical strength over agility. Dodging bullets isn’t as easy as it used to be.

The most recent suit, in spit of the streamlining, is still more heavily armoured than any of the previous versions. It’s also the first version to include moderate robotic assistance, as 45-year-old Batman tries to offset the two decades of damage he has done to his body. This line of thinking is what eventually leads to the Beyond suit, shortly before a worsening heart condition forces Batman into retirement.

Ma! He’s drawin Batman agaaain! This began as an idea while watching the new Daredevil, of all things. I really liked the rough costume Murdock started out with on the show, and wanted to do something similar with Bruce Wayne and the batsuit. So here’s an ostensibly early iteration of the Batman costume that relies more on his physical training and agility than it does high-tech body armour. This would be the costume Bruce uses before any serious injuries force him to rethink the design. I decided on a Golden Age design influence, not because this is supposed to be the 1930s/40s Batman, but because it’s a young Batman. I kinda want to do a series working with a progression of Batsuits through Bruce’s career, but we’ll see if I get to it. I’d be hugely remiss not to mention this drawing from Chris Samnee as a reference (basically the entire helmet/cowl). Doubly so to not also bring up Paul Pope’s fantastic Batman: Year 100 design (the slightly-too-short-sleeves, the heavy boot laces, the boxers...).
