Part of me is thinking ‘why the fuck didn’t I watch Leverage: Con Artists when it first came out???’ (other than the fact that all the places I tried to watch it were sketchy or didn’t have subtitles) but part of me is also like, really glad I waited to watch it until after Redemption.

When L:CA was first announced and aired, it was supposed to be a Korean remake of the original show. So people looked at the characters and went ‘oh that’s the Korean version of Parker.’ Like we had a whole conversation in the Leverage discord about how to refer to the new characters when we didn’t know their names yet, and for a while people used k!Hardison and k!Eliot and so on and so forth. Which I think set everyone up for disappointment, because they are not the same characters. (eventually we settled on k!grifter and k!thief, which is a lot better all around)

Because the thing is, yeah the characters and some of the plot lines in L:CA are based off of OG, but they have their differences. Eui Sung is not Hardison, and trying to think of him that way will only leave you disappointed. Simply because they’re different characters.

But then Redemption came out! And told us about the 12 other international Leverage teams! And explicitly said (via Hurley in the Golf Job) that Tae Joon & co are one of those international teams! Which means that instead of viewing L:CA as an AU of the original show, it turned into ‘this is how another Leverage team came into existence’. Which made it so much better to watch, because you’re no longer looking at the L:CA team like ‘that’s not what Sophie would have done’, and instead thinking ‘it’s cool how Soo Kyung did something that Sophie wouldn’t have done’. And yeah the characters share a lot of similar backstory elements, but they’re different enough to stand on their own.

Also, Redemption itself didn’t live up to the original show. Don’t get me wrong, Redemption is miles better than any other sequel series/reboot I’ve ever seen. But as any sequel, it had it’s problems. Most of which are fairly minor, and on the whole I do enjoy Redemption. But again, it’s impossible to create a new Leverage thing and have it live up to the OG show. And yes, nostalgia and all of that play into it, but the original was just... so good, so nothing else can really compare.

Since I watched L:CA after Redemption, it meant that I wasn’t comparing L:CA only to the impossible standard of the original show that I’d created in my head, but I was also comparing it to Redemption, which honestly made me give L:CA a little more credit than if I had watched it before Redemption. And because we had confirmation that L:CA and OG Leverage exist in the same universe, I didn’t look at Tae Joon and see Nate Ford, I saw a new character in a new show that I was excited to watch.

#i dont know if this really makes sense but i had to get it out there #and im not trying to shit on redemption. i really do love redemption like a lot #and i think they did a lot of things right #but its kind of a gift to be able to compare l:ca to og AND redemption simply bc it lowered my standards #and tbh i dont think thats a bad thing #also i cannot overemphasize how much better it is to watch l:ca as a whole new show #and not just an au of the og show #like if i had gone into l:ca expecting roy to be eliot and not just their hitter i wouldve been annoyed by all the changes #but since i was just looking at him as their hitter i was instead able to be excited about those changes bc look! a whole new character!#thats cool!#leverage #leverage: con artists #leverage: redemption #con artists #leverage redemption #l:ca #meta #l:ca meta
