the sabrina episode could have been about not everyone forgiving you or liking you. the girl squad and friendships in general in ml are so black and white it's BORING. you can understand someone changed, but still not want to be around them- and thats FINE. you don't have to be friends with your friends' friends, too. not everyone should be expected to forgive and forget. marinette could work fine with sabrina as a co-worker/subordinate, yet not pursue anything deeper. that is OKAY. sabrina can have other people. just because they overlap in friends doesn't mean we all need to be some big, happy family. no one is obligated to do that.

they also could've done that with felix, too. instead he apologized off-screen! nobody gives a damn about ANYTHING he's done. how fun!

Actually, a big problem with the Sabrina episode is that it doesn’t work like that in Miraculous. In Miraculous, EVERYONE worth knowing is Marinette’s friend, and all of those friends placed Marinette’s approval as the turning point for Sabrina. Like, imagine if you’re stuck between being friendless in middle school or cosying up to the most popular girl in school. You have to do the latter.

When the episode originally aired, I pointed this out. Marinette has the level of social clout usually limited to the VILLAINS of the school drama genre. But, like, if the girl squad was allowed to have their own opinion on things that doesn’t rely on Marinette’s, I can see some of them being willing to befriend Sabrina, some being unwilling, and some wanting a bit more time.

I agree that such a lesson would be perfect for this series. ‘Sublimation’ would have been an infinitely better episode if it had ended with Sublime just telling Marinette that she’s creepy and off-putting and she doesn’t want to be friends with her.

The Félix thing is such bullshit, not gonna lie. Who cares if he sold off the Kwamis off or killed almost everyone in Paris! He said sorry OFF-SCREEN!

ive been thinking about what kind of punishment that would fit for marinette after all the bulshit she has done, both as a guardian and also a holder. I mean after losing almost the whole box I think she should be fired as a guardian not to mention the abuse of power and her tyrant which endangered cat noir as one of the important member (or supposed to, marinette doesn't think that way tho) as a leader which would added the punishment that she would lose that position. But losing both guardian and ladybug miraculous would... Do nothing? This is a girl who always whine about how hard it is to live a double life but also swallow all credit and fame and power she has. That's what make me stuck whenever I want to give marinette the taste of the real world, a consequences, because losing both would do nothing to her and her losing guardianship and lost her memories isn't a punishment it's like let her be more free from her consequences. Going to jail? Since she's also an accomplice to monarch after the lie. Sorry for bad grammar.

Maybe try to approach Marinette and consequences from the perspective of what would be the logical consequences for her actions and how to protect her victims from further harm, rather than trying to figure out how to make her feel "punished". Like, I think the absolute worst thing that could happen to Marinette is if her "most important person in the universe" privileges got revoked. Don't shield her from the consequences of her actions, let characters react like real people to the shit she tries to pull. That's actual justice.

Like, should Marinette lose her position as Ladybug and the Guardian? ABSOLUTELY. She's caused and IS ACTIVELY CAUSING so much harm due to the unchecked power and privilege these positions grant her. Protecting her victims means that she MUST be stripped of the opportunity to keep doing this stuff. Like, yes, she often whines about what big responsibilities she has, but, let's not kid ourselves. She likes how special being Ladybug makes her feel. How could she not when she has absolute power over an entire team of superheroes (who are actually her supposed real life friends)?

How should I put this? When the whole series is NOTHING but Marinette constantly whining about how hard she has it, how tough the decisions she makes 100% of her own volition are on her and how her charmed life is just such agony, I feel like Marinette being wiped of her memory so that we can FINALLY get a freaking BREAK from her constant whining is worth the cost of her "getting to walk free". Especially since this downfall would most logically come at the hands of her so-called friends, who, finally getting sick of her nonsense, strip her of her powers and prestige and replace her, only to discover that Ladybug the despot was secretly "sweet, unassuming" Marinette all along.

Like, imagine that scenario. Marinette has recently lost her memory of the last year, only to discover her bully is no longer in her class! Yay! But, wait...no one in her class is talking to her. How...strange.

I would definitely write about a new celestial guardian, come to Paris (because Suhan isn't reliable or competent at all) and strip her from her position as a guardian, also miraculous holder but she can keep her memories that has nothing to do with guardian related thing. Since this is after the big lie exposed, I also going to make her identity to be outed to the whole team and her parents. This of course make her friends walk out on her, even Luka. Bonus point if her parents, especially Sabine express her disappointment toward her.

To rub the salt to the wound, Mr. Bug become the new ladybug holder and he does a much better job and he even become more popular and loved than she ever was.

So yeah, my "punishment" for Marinette is that not only she lost her position as guardian and miraculous leader, she also got to see the cat she always loves to see as "less than her" actually a much better hero and leader, hearing people praising him how much Mr Bug is a better hero that Ladybug everywhere, everyday, losing her friends and family's trust, and more importantly, she also lost her prized possession that is Adrien Agreste. Bonus point if Chloe become a new black cat.

What advice do you have for up and coming authors hoping to avoid the same mistakes you pointed out in Bryke's writing? At this point, I'm fearful of publishing something that could end up being torn apart by you and others, so any tips on sprucing up writing skills would be greatly appreciated :)

Honestly, up-and-coming authors would be very unlikely to have the problem that Bryke increasingly has, and the main reason why their storytelling has gone downhill: too much creative control, and protection from the editors. But before we get into that, there is one aspect that you can work on as a beginning writer: don’t play favorites with your characters.

You might have a character that you think is the most wonderful person in the entire world. It might even be your most popular character. But you can’t let your pet characters run the show just because you like them.

Characters can’t just get rewarded in the end because they’re the protagonists. They can’t always be right about things when everyone else is wrong. They have to learn at least as much from the world as the world learns from them; that is how they grow and engage the audience. Stories are about solving problems, and if your character does not solve those problems in a believable way, well, you haven’t created much of a character to begin with. (Note that “believable” is not the same as “realistic”; you can use magic or futuristic science to solve a problem, as long as that doesn’t equate to a “get out of plothold free” card and your character’s solution is consistent with the rest of that fictional universe.)

Now let’s talk about that editorial thing.

As a new writer, you don’t have as much final say over your work as you eventually might if you meet with success. Look at the “Harry Potter” books: J.K. Rowling’s subplots didn’t start running away with and inflating the size of her stories until around Book 4, when she became, for all intents and purposes, too popular to reign in. Bryke have been what I like to call George Lucased. Let’s look at a few choice comments from that link:

George is a great idea man, but should not be the full captain of a ship. It’s business and George has let go of it too Jett even said that he has let it go. So it seems they have, and should be saying no George a lot, it’s how the creative process works. We don’t need another Rick “Yes man” Macallum in the house. Of course they will take any good ideas of his. But just like during the old days (the OT) he had people challenging him left and right and it made it all for the better.

Because as the big-picture, go-to guy, Lucas is awesome. He can’t write for love nor money, and that goes double for dialogue and characterisation, which are the lifeblood of films. But he knows every atom of the SW universe; all its myths, its tech, its inhabitants, better than anyone.And in a very large win-win, we now get actual writers to do the writing. People who can take the big picture and make it into an engaging story with (hopefully) characters we don’t want to throw through a window.

I think there is nothing wrong with consulting, but as Iger said in Febuary Lucas does understand the decisions are not his in the end. Because while Lucas has great ideas not being kept in check is his problem. So there are things where they will just say…no George. That’s not a good idea. But for the most part I think it’s good that he does what he does best, an idea man. Not a writer, or director, but the brainstormer. And let others polish those ideas more so.

So, budding writers, a word to the wise: listen to your editors and take criticism from outside sources, even once you get rich and famous. If your story is solid, it can take the pressure of critique and editing while leaving your vision intact.

The difference between whether a character flaw or plot point should be turned into an arc vs. just cut entirely lies in how that meshes with the rest of the character it relates to, as well as the story it's in as a whole.

For example, Adrien continuing to chase Ladybug despite being rejected over and over is something that definitely should be an arc. His core character flaw is his excessive optimism. He keeps hoping that things will change, and that results in not knowing how to let a relationship end, or when to stop pursuing a goal. This, combined with his power of destruction, lends itself perfectly well to an arc about how sometimes it's healthy to let things die, despite the pain it causes in the moment. It's for the same reason that I roll my eyes whenever people say Adrien facing Gabriel would've been too painful for him. The fact that it's painful and bittersweet is the whole point.

On the flipside, the sentinonsense and the Big Lie are two things that should just be cut. Between Adrien being restricted by his father and his power of destruction, the set-up is about Adrien escaping from the restrictions in his life. Being a sentimonster takes those restrictions and makes them inescapable. Adrien will forever be vulnerable to having his free will hijacked, and that just doesn't jive, narratively. Sure, you could have a moment where Adrien severs the bond between himself and his amok, but at that point it's like he was never a sentimonster to begin with, so why bother? It doesn't add anything to Adrien's character; it's a shocking twist for the sake of having a shocking twist.

Same with the Big Lie. For Adrien, the most narratively coherent moment to confront everything his father has done to him would have been the S5 finale. Moments like him destroying Gabriel's statue or yelling at an akuma with his father's face ring hollow, because, like. Gabriel's dead. There are no stakes anymore. Adrien doesn't risk anything and doesn't have anything to lose. Learning that sometimes it's healthy to let something end doesn't work if that something already ended. It's the storytelling equivalent of "You can't fire me, I quit!"

As for Marinette, remember how I said that the set-up for Adrien's story is about destroying the restrictions in his life a couple of paragraphs ago? Well, now Marinette is the one restricting Adrien by lying to him and telling him what he's supposed to think. Symbolically, Marinette's role in Adrien's story is about creating (natch) a new, healthier future after the old, unhealthy status quo has been destroyed. This puts her fundamentally at odds with Gabriel. They pretty much have to be polar opposites for this to work. Instead, nor only are they very similar, but Marinette has now taken over Gabriel's old role as Adrien's villain. Why the fuck would you do that to your main character and romantic lead?!
