Last minute number crunching thing our final day of Business Development Camp. Collectively, we provided over 100hrs or training within the span of 8 days at two different camps. One targeted 15 women learning hands-on techniques to work with local grains, fruits, and vegetables as well as incorporating soft-skills like marketing, bookkeeping, and business formalization. The other involved 40 youth and taught them the principles of entrepreneurship using case studies and conducting research in the field. My students and I after a brief certificate ceremony celebrating the completion of the entrepreneurship training we had this week! Initially, they hardly spoke, but as we progressed they became more creative and outspoken. Now we will follow up with business plan writing workshops once a week for 3 weeks.The Kaolack Chamber of Commerce will choose the 2 best ones in November and offer them incubation space, access to general services, and computer access for a year! Can these two superfoods change the world?

Hip, Hip, HOORAY! It’s almost silly how excited I become when I see these two superfoods in the media. Not only is Baobab easily accessible in Senegal, the Senegalese love it! In Senegal, we call the stuff inside the Boabab gourds Mbouye. I can go to the market and pick up a small bag of mbouye and chew the white fiber off the seeds. It’s sweet and tasty! Most Senegalese prefer to make a drink using mbouye... even despite the crazy amount of sugar they add to it, the nutritional value and fiber from the Baobab is still there. Moringa production and transformation is, in fact, a project I am heavily involved in! In Senegal, most people refer to Moringa as Nebedaye. The challenge we face with Moringa, is creating behavioral change among the people in Senegal. Our goal is to encourage the Senegalese to incorporate the use of Moringa leaves, powder, and oil as a regular staple in their diet. Increasing awareness not only leads to a healthier Senegal, but a more economically prosperous one thanks to the activities that take place throughout the value-chain of Moringa production.
