THURSDAY NIGHT TASTING
Tonight, 6:30-8:30 pm, we're reeeeeaaally excited to welcome our pal Will Sugarman for a tasting at Dandy! Will is a pretty big deal over at Skurnik Wines, he knows a ton, and he's super fun too, and he'll be pouring three terrific New World reds to get us through this cold spell and beyond. We'll have cheese from Eastern District and bread from She Wolf to boot. Join us for the party!
Brick House Gamay, Oregon
Turns out the marine sediment-laden earth of Ribbon Ridge, Oregon, where this gorgeous Gamay is grown, has a lot in common with Beaujolais, including low soil pH and an abundance of shiny mica and silica. Add careful, conscientious biodynamic farming, and it's all really working for this wine- it's freaking delicious, with fragrant, blooming florals, a little star anise, and a plentiful red berry fruit. $35
Valravn Old Vine Zinfandel, Sonoma County
This hand-made, small-batch Sonoma Zin is a side project of the folks at the Banshee winery with a mission to make Zinfandel great again. Their vines are old, ranging from 50 to 105 years of age, all dry farmed and bush pruned. The vino is more along the lines of an old-school Cali Zin before a misguided trend made people start making gigantic punch-you-in-the-face wines from the grape. It's full bodied, sure, but super well balanced with blackberry jam, espresso, licorice, and remarkable freshness. Drink this warming wine while watching the snow melt from your fire escape. $20
Punt Road Shiraz, Yarra Valley
This hand picked, foot stomped Shiraz from the sunny Yarra Valley is exactly the punchy, spicy style of Shiraz we're looking for without any of the chemical-y, overripe, aggressive qualities we find more often than not. Punt Road is full of character, but none of it is overwhelming- soft violets, fresh cracked black pepper, a little black olive, and black cherry all get along very nicely here. Drink this polished beaut. with a steak or a juicy cheeseburger. $25
