He's a human thief rogue!

26 years old, trans man, biromantic/asexual

Personality-wise: He's cynical, grumpy, sarcastic, and easily irritable. Deeply anxious. But also... thoughtful and compassionate. Deeply passionate. He cares so much. He likes to show his affection in quiet ways.

This is a guy who can never catch a win (untrue, but also. in essence, he can never catch a win. FSGHDJ he's my saddest soldier, I can't even lie. it's okay though, his story is all about love and healing in the end)

Despite living in a fantasy world, he's a fantasy athiest LMFAO (in his original d&d setting, it was technically a low magic campaign! however it's still funny to throw that out as one of his main characterization points because it also does just cover a very important element of his personality. which is to say. the skepticism. and also his insane religious trauma)

Do you like nerds? He's your guy. He has category 10 autism and like 7 billion special interests that he wants to talk about sooo bad.

Likes to journal, write poetry, and read. He knows floriography (it's one of his special interests!)

In modern AUs, he's a punk. (In one particular AU we have, he's a tattoo artist) He likes to analyze music and make playlists for every little thing. He's fixing up old cars. He's climbing buildings to watch the sunset. He's telling everyone to eat the rich.

AH... but about whether or not he's seeing anyone.... YES... and NO... AFSGHJ in canon? not yet. he has a canon ship that would go on to become canon if we played that game longer, but he also exists in so many different universes where my friends and I will just play dolls.... so his relationship status varies like crazy.

Kicking my feet!!! OH I have SO many thoughts about them (and I was actually planning on reblogging one of those oc question memes thangs for em once artfight concludes! if anyone would be interested in that ofc!)

But!! I think a good place to start would be just kinda explaining them a little better here, I reckon! Get ready for some reading!! 💖✨ thank you in advance if you read all of this!! they consume my waking moments

Part One: The Beginnings (and "The Incident")

Heart and Spade grew up as childhood friends... and when they finally outgrew their hometown, they left together, eventually ending up forming their identities as Spade and Heart: two gambling addicts turned outlaws. A couple of charming hustlers looking for their next jackpot with a little mischief. They thought themselves completely untouchable until their luck finally ran out.

Something to note about the world the Jokers hail from is that it's positively rife with the supernatural... and while most folks live their lives without having ever experienced something themselves outside of old stories, many still find themselves entangled with these things before they can even realize it's too late.

Which is what happened to our boys!

They happened to sit down at the wrong table with the wrong fella- neither recognized how off this stranger looked until the moment Heart cheated and was instantly shot dead with his own gun. Only then did Spade see how inhuman its amber eyes were, the fuzzy jaw, the sharp teeth curled in a smile. Sitting across from them was The Coyote, an entity that embodied luck itself. And those hubristic few, like Spade and Heart, always find their way to its table and end up being ruined. Humbled and brought back down to earth with a crash. Heart believed himself above the rules of the table: No cheating. And he paid the ultimate price. (If you wanna read Heart's POV on this moment, click here!! My friend wrote it!)

But then Spade was offered a chance to amend this... to now play for Heart's life back, so long as he wished to make a significant bet and play by the game's rules. Having no time to grieve, to think, just overwhelmed with the desire to get his companion back (they're scarily codependent), Spade puts his own heart up as a wager. A heart for his Heart. And miraculously, Spade ends up winning the game.

Heart comes back with Spade's heart now beating within his chest, granting his body its life back, but putting Spade one foot in the grave. But it didn't matter because they were together again. 

However, Spade soon realizes Heart didn't come back alone. There's a dark force looming over his partner, something that obscures his features from Spade, no matter how much he tries to look around it. A separate entity (later to be known as 'The House') ended up tagging a ride as Heart's soul returned, claiming his body as its vessel. The only thing now stopping it from completely overtaking him is the warm heart that now sits in his chest. 

Part Two: It Gets Really Looney Tunes in Here for a Second (but it's also complicating their situation so much more):

Not long after the Jokers had their incident in that private room, they had to quickly turn tail and start running again after a man from their past had come to claim a bounty on their heads. (His name is Whitestone! But I'd need a whole other post to explain his deal with the Jokers LOL)

In their efforts to get away, they made it to a ranch and were able to snag one of the horses and hoof it. However, as it turns out, this horse was actually a shapeshifter, and the ranch they had raided belonged to none other than Wilder, an occultist who made a hobby out of breeding and raising these creatures. And shapeshifters feed on misfortune and negative energy, and the entity currently entwined with Heart's soul was practically made of the stuff. 

Spade only realized something was wrong with the "horse" far too late, being able to see its true form with his Supernatural Sight... but by then, the horse was stuck with them. Feeding off of the entity, which would in turn make Heart pretty sick... So now the mission for Spade becomes: get rid of that damn horse. He has to keep The House alive so that Heart can stay alive. 

The task of getting rid of the shapeshifter proved difficult though. The "horse" makes itself look extremely decrepit to make selling it or giving it away basically impossible. And it would just follow after them if they tried anyways. All the while, the Jokers are being hunted down by Whitestone, and now Wilder as well, because he wants his shapeshifter back. The Jokers can't even return the creature to him because there's a crazy man with a gun pointed at their heads in that direction LOL-- So now you see the conundrum!

Part Three (they're so doomed, chat, it's getting bad!):

Spade begins doing everything in his power to keep this entity alive, and he also begins trying to speak with it when it's around, trying to understand it... and trying to cut some kind of deal for Heart, to grant him more time as himself.

All the while, he and Heart do not discuss their respective experiences with The House. Heart's having dreams where he can see it, see the void he was sent to when he died, but he refuses to believe anything is actually wrong with him (rather he just denies it, he's not a fool he just... is a good liar, even to himself)... even when he's spitting black ichor and blacking out frequently, losing time, doing things that he doesn't remember doing.

Spade doesn't talk about communicating with this entity at all, never lets Heart know he can see it or even that it's in him,,, because he wants to fix it all on his own. Because he feels like this must be partly his fault, Heart ending up with this thing in him just because Spade couldn't let him go. But also, how could he ever explain why he did what he did? The enormity of it all? And the enormity of what he feels now, even trying to look at Heart and only seeing The House. Not to mention... Spade never grieved the loss; he never had the chance. Heart was gone and then back again in the next moment, but he still seemed out of reach. And Spade just knew that he needed to Fix It. Get rid of this thing between them, then it can all go back to normal.

So he closes himself off in a way and distance builds between them as they don't communicate for the first time ever in their lives. The first time they're not both in on the "bit." And it eats them both up inside, but they try to keep up those poker faces because what else can you do? Bide their time. Unfortunately, though... time is a precious thing we all have a limited amount of. 

Shit eventually hits the fan, they reach their breaking point, missing each other so badly and having this Thing between them finally shoved right in their faces- so neither could avoid it nor deny it. And they play a game of Go Fish, like they used to as kids. And they talk, finally. 

It was a start. A start over. But it was soon to be the end. 

The House eventually finds another vessel, and when it pulls out of Heart, his body/soul is far too weak to carry on, and he succumbs. But... this time, he and Spade have enough time to hold each other and tell one another what they really feel. To quit beating around the bush when it comes to their feelings for each other. They won't have another chance after this.

(AH... but, spoiler: they actually Do have another chance later on! Heart comes back as a ghost down the line- it's a whole thang. again, that would require a separate post to explain LMFAO but!!! they WILL get their happy ending, it just takes like so so so much pain and adjustment to get to it. the torment nexus has its claws in them frfr)

ANYWAYS... Things I think about A Lot:

After making his deal to get Heart back, Spade doesn't have a heartbeat, having given his literal heart to his partner. He also becomes somewhat cold to the touch, in addition to having the life dull from his eyes. A symptom of having one foot in the grave, allowing him to see what exists between the material and ethereal planes. (Spade has supernatural vision! It was a "boon" granted to him after playing a fair game with The Coyote.)

Heart's features are obscured from Spade when he looks at him because Spade can see supernatural entities/forces now, and when the House is not possessing Heart, it just clings to him like a shadow. It drives Spade mad that the only time he can see Heart's features again is when the entity disappears inside of him and puppets him around. 

The entity inside of Heart is known as The House! (Because The House always wins.) -- It enjoys toying around with Spade, who can always see it exactly for what it is, even when it tries to pretend to be Heart. Using his voice and his face to taunt Spade, saying things he wished he could hear from the real Heart. (You'll notice I tag things with Ship: Jokers and Ship: Three of a Kind. Both of those tags reference Spade and Heart, but the latter references The House as being part of that dynamic too !! World's most fucked up polycule that's not a polycule, it's just like receiving a wretched third that likes to torment you)

Spade can only look Heart in the eye for an extended period when he's drunk. It's difficult for him to meet Heart's eyes outside of that because... he can only be reminded of how Wrong things are. And he's just been sitting with that knowledge on his own, trying desperately to resolve it by himself. 

Their breaking point occurs when Heart sees the entity's reflection in Spade's eyes when they're just a bit too close one night... and suddenly everything gets thrown out onto the table. Realizing they both knew about this and both made the conscious effort to not bring it up to the other man. Realizing how truly distant they'd become. That they let this thing keep them apart,,, even though losing each other is their greatest fear above all else.

I've been cowboy-ifying my own OC as I adapt him from DND to VTM and your own cowboys have been a great source of inspiration to get me into my vampire cowboy mood, idk if this has been asked before but do they have playlists at all?

Yeah, we've got two playlists for them, actually! :D

One of them is less "cowboy" and is just a general catch-all for any song we think captures Heart & Spade's vibes/dynamic! >> Three of a Kind

^^ this playlist actually makes me so sick in the head about these two, holy shit,,, if you want a playlist that captures the sickening energy of being hopelessly devoted but deeply doomed lovers that have fun together but cannot communicate abt their feelings. this is a good playlist for that LOL

Hello!!! What's an OC you haven't had the chance to talk about in a while but want to? :D

Hi!!! Omg... there are so many ocs I'd love to blab about.

But you know what-- I think I have some interesting, unconventional ocs I'd like to discuss! A bit of context: I plan on DMing a campaign set in a homebrew world called Dice Adventure! For this world, I created a whole new pantheon of deities that are integral to the worldbuilding... and they've become something like ocs to me!! <3

My pantheon revolves around concepts. They're abstract, ephemeral, ever-changing. The deities and their chosen emissaries are the embodiment of these concepts and are shaped by perception. They are nuanced, inherently, because of how many different interpretations and associations these concepts naturally have. As such, these gods are not forces of inherent good nor evil, they are simply that: forces that work to continue the flow of the world.

These spirits were not included in the moodboards, nor are they necessarily part of the main pantheon but I'll write abt em anyways:

🔥 The Fire Spirit: This is the only archaic elemental spirit that has been completely unchanged since her conception (in the sense of like.. not fusing with other spirits or evolving into a main deity).

🔥 ^^ No one really "prays" to her as a concept anymore, ever since The Forge gave her flames to the mortals (like Prometheus), but she is still around because fire has such an important part to play in all matters of life. Her energy can be felt in any flame, she is the mother of all fire.

❓[REDACTED] !!! because of reasons :3 I deeply wish to be able to speak about them here but,,, my players follow me!!! ;w; If anyone did wanna know more abt any hidden lore, feel free to message me abt it hehe

hi tumblr, you don't know who Dante is yet but you're about to!!

Extremely brief overview for anyone who doesn't know: Dante Inferno (they/he) is my drow fathomless warlock, pirate captain, and awful babygirl who wants the world to burn. Dante took on their warlock pact to get power and bring suffering to those who wronged them and hopefully find the daughter that was stolen from them many years ago. However, this pact comes at a price... it's actually Dante's misery that the patron is most interested in. 🥀 They may be in too deep to figure this out though!! For years, they've been self-destructing and falling deeper into corruption... and are quickly hurtling towards a future where they may be left with nothing of who they once were.

Anyways!! This corruption is represented heavily within their design!! This is most apparent with their tattoos, which reflect how much power/abilities Dante has accrued. Their body itself serves as their warlock tome.

📌 Each of their "tattoos" are actually scars that Dante has left on their own body, carved into the skin by ritual dagger, to imbue their body with power. The scars have blackened as though frostbitten, but this is more for visual effect.

Here's what each tattoo symbolizes:

(LEFT ARM) Abyssal/Deep Speech Runes: Each symbol correlates to a different spell ability that they’ve been provided by their patron. Spells like Eldritch Blast, Hex, Cause Fear.

(RIGHT ARM) Sea-Serpent: This is their summons arm! Dante, as a warlock, tends to lean more into the control + summoner type! This arm corresponds to their ability to summon different abyssal/deep sea entities to assist them in battle. Spells include: Evard's Black Tentacles, Summon Undead, Tentacle of the Deep (ability).

Back Tattoo: These deep speech/abyssal runes spell out the word TREACHERY. It was carved into their skin by their patron and represents the abilities granted by their Eldritch Invocations.

(Back of) Neck Tattoo: A marking left by the Spider Queen when Dante made an agreement with her. YEP! They've made two deals with different demonic entities. This tattoo basically represents her eyes at the back of her neck. (I can explain their pact with her but. that's for another post FSGHSJ)

Gills: The first marks they carved into their body when they took on their pact. This gives them the permanent ability to breathe underwater.

X on chest: This one actually isn't related to their warlock abilities at all. It's actually a promise they made to their daughter... to find her again. X marks the spot. (They had cut an X into her cheek when they were separated so that they'd be able to recognize her in the future. So much more to say abt this but that's the gist!)

They were going to keep gaining more marks as the campaign went on longer... And eventually, the tips of their extremities were going to begin to blacken from all of the corrupt power they were storing!

📌 Also, fun fact for you, Tooth! Dante was eventually going to take the Eldritch Invocation that would allow them to send messages to others by writing on their skin. They were going to have some of the Bleeding Hearts carve their names onto their body so they could do that :3

And for the rest of the meta design lore, I'll also put those into bullet points for ease:

Their eyes have split heterochromia (red and blue halves in both iris) and slit pupils. The heterochromia was brought on by their pact and just kinda gives them a rly freaky look!

They've usually always got some spider motifs on em,, they have an extremely complicated relationship w the Spider Queen and their identity as a drow. But we can also say that it's just because the spider motif drip goes hard.

This isn't smth that can be reflected in art easily but their skin is COLD to the touch! Warmth no longer feels the same to them anymore.

Here's a really brief overview that I wrote in another post (which also includes their tattoo lore and some fun facts, if you were interested in reading that!)

But I'll also include a longer version below the cut that goes into some of the details of their story!! (Also- I wrote a section at the bottom explaining why I think Dante would get along with Bad End Husk :D )

-- HERE'S THE LONG(ER) VERSION -- (This is still a shortened version of events, go down below this if you want like. the FULL version. I threw in their toyhouse link there!)

Dante comes from a rough part of the Underdark where they grew up impoverished and neglected, but the only thing that really kept them going was a dream to one day get out of that shithole. And in a way, they got their dream,,,! However, they only clawed their way out of the Underdark when they realized they were pregnant and needed to save their kid from the upbringing he was subjected to. Dante wanted far better for his daughter. She became their entire world, their incentive, something good to look forward to. She gave their life meaning,,, For three years, they were able to live on the surface in a local kingdom populated by other drow who also escaped from the Underdark. Those were the happiest years of Dante's life, but they weren't to last. Unfortunately, it was discovered that Dante didn't come into the surface kingdom through the proper channels, so they decided to send them back. However, they would keep Dante's daughter because she never became baptized under Spider Queen society... They dragged Dante away from their daughter kicking and screaming. However, he managed to cut an X into his daughter's cheek as a desperate last resort, promising that they would find her again someday. And then they were brought back to the Underdark and sent reeling into a deep depressive spiral. The only thing that motivated them was the thought of returning back to their daughter..... and making everyone who hurt them pay. This anger, grief, and desperation eventually made them seek out a patron who would help give them all the power they needed to leave the Underdark again and achieve all of their goals. They stumbled across Znn'lusca, a demon who feeds on despair... and she only asked that Dante cause as much misery as possible in exchange for her powers. He agreed, immediately having a plan in mind to kill two birds with one stone-- They ended up making another pact with the Spider Queen herself, promising to send all of the escaped drow back into the Underdark (because if they didn't let Dante escape, he wouldn't show them any mercy either). In exchange, the Spider Queen wouldn't pursue Dante and try to force them back either, so long as they brought her "lost children" back. With these new pacts formed, Dante makes it back to the surface and they are told to focus on gaining power before going after their kid. Zinn played into their fear of being forced back into the Underdark again, planting seeds of doubt in their mind that kept them from attempting to seek out their daughter. Every time Dante would bring up going after her, Zinn would talk them out of it and reroute their thoughts. Because... little did Dante know but their despair was the tastiest of all, and the longer they went without their daughter, the richer it became. 15 years pass. Dante is now an established cutthroat pirate captain who uses a submarine as a ship... trafficking escaped drow back to the Underdark on the side, forgetting their original goals and who they were before the hurt with each day that passes. And then they get thrown into jail and the campaign starts from there,,!! TLDR: Dante is in SO much trouble AFSGH they're stuck in a web they can't get out from,,, being in a pact with not one but two demons who do not wish anything good for him. And he's still missing his daughter so bad,, and he is miserable and angry and hates everyone.

WHY DANTE WOULD LIKE BAD END HUSK:

Also, to elaborate on why I think Dante would enjoy bad end Husk-- Husk is exactly the type of patron Dante would have gravitated towards, being the lord of "secrecy and cunning revenge" and plotting the downfall of their enemies. That's the kind of thing Dante wants oh so badly rn!! It's the reason why they ended up making a pact with their actual patron. The desire for power, the ambition, but most of all-- feeling so wronged and wanting everyone who ever hurt them and their daughter to suffer.

Dante is a conniving backstabber, the ultimate betrayer... a liar by nature. The word 'treachery' has been carved into their back in Abyssal/Deep Speech. They have only learned how to survive and sometimes that means using everyone around you as a stepping stool. In the end, the only people who matter are themself and their daughter. (But truly deep down, they're just a REALLY hurt person who is lashing out in the wrong ways. They're just scared, angry, and sad. And they easily fall into corruption and pacts with big bad entities SGHDJK)
