I am never watching a show like animal kingdom again brooooo

my thoughts on animal kingdom after finishing s1:

(spoilers under the cut if you haven't watched!)

- the smash cuts throughout the episodes are so good. it makes the atmosphere disorienting and jarring in a way that gets you stuck feeling this hair-raising anxiety all the way to the end. very few pieces of media have given me that feeling.

- the direction of this show is brilliant. nearly every scene is shot as if the character onscreen is being followed and again, it really adds to the unnerving vibe here. when they showed J retrieving the stolen watch from nicki's jewelry box, i was like, "wait, is she... watching him steal from her?"

- the dynamics between smurf and all four of her sons... Waow. from a surface level, it's emotional enmeshment at best and an "extended oedipus complex" at worst, but it's so much more than that, especially with deran. he doesn't have the same subconscious... "attraction" towards smurf that his brothers do, but he's especially pathetic in that he soaks up every ounce of love he can get from smurf because he knows the second he comes out? it'll never be the same.

- pope cody is such a fucking weirdo. (/affectionate) the way he carries himself physically, his affinity for staring in a way that inevitably invokes anxiety, the slur of his words when he's trying not to lose his shit, the neutralizing effect he has on smurf... i could go on and on!!! the scene in s1e4 where pope gets the stripper alone, we see her go from sexually excited to completely unnerved and vulnerable around pope in the snap of a finger. are we kidding!!! shawn hatosy should've gotten some kind of award for playing this character.

- j is such a well written character and in many way, the most ballsy of them all. from the second we saw him next to an overdosed julia on that couch with the most hollowed out, resigned expression on his face... i knew i was intrigued. he's done many things that smurf's sons would never have even considered but admitting that he basically worked with the cops to her face? i have a feeling he'll be the last one standing when all is said and done.

honorable mentions:

- my absolute faves are j, pope, and deran! they have that special flavor of emotionally tortured that immediately commands my attention.

- i'm eagerly awaiting an explanation for baz/julia's backstory because they can't just drop the "baz could be j's dad" bomb and then walk away...

- i think craig's actor has a worse accent slip than gerran howell 😭 immediately had to google if he was english

overall, this is the weirdest fucking show i've ever seen and i love it.
