In 1920, Robert L. Vann launched The Competitor, an ambitious magazine that covered a wide range of issues and featured work from many prominent black writers. The magazine lasted for only 18 months, but Vann continued as editor of the Pittsburgh Courier, one of the nation’s most influential black newspapers, until his death in 1940.
