I'm kind of disappointed with how the SU movie ended.
Yes, spinel is fucking awesome and has a great backstory that's believable and her trauma is incredibly relatable.
But Steven fell really..flat for me. Obviously he is tired of dealing with his moms mistakes, and doesnt want to deal with spinel and doesnt want to fight anymore. But his actions in my opinion are selfish and entitled in regards to the plot.
Spinel is a very hurt character, and she has trauma and lashes out. But so did every other character, the difference is spinel got a very..sub par resolution in comparison.
I know rebecca stated that spinel is representative of the "journey of healing" and that there is no clear or true happy ending the way we think it is.
Except lapis is already a very prominent depiction of the journey of healing, its ups and downs and what not.
As a viewer I completely sympathize with spinel and her hurt and rage. And I empathize with her feeling of betrayal by Steven because throughout the movie, until Steven's personal epiphany, he is essentially using her.
He is legitimately going through the motions to save *his* friends, and *his* planet and his only goal in helping spinel is to basically tame her. Not help her like it is portrayed.
His concept of fixing things with a song arent going to work because he contributed in spinel's spiral, whether he recognizes it or not.
Spinel stops because her spiral took its course and like how spirals do, it ended in self deprecation and shame. She didnt actually heal, she just fell out of a spiral, and she will more than likely spiral again because if anything she shows clears symptoms of BPD and BPD is not fixed after one spiral.
And then..the ending..spinel decides to go with the diamonds because it's a fresh start, she is still traumatized, she still needs a proper environment to address that trauma and move past it and I highly doubt the diamonds can offer that.
The diamonds have only very recently been redeemed, they are literally still being redeemed in the movie, they are still traumatized by the loss of pink and absolutely would not pose a positive and self dependent environment for spinel. Which is what she deserves and needs.
Both the diamonds and spinel are not in the position to heal without adequate support and that's what ultimately bugs me.
Idk..i feel like the diamonds and spinel are ultimately set up for failure if they stay together and their relationship is entirely forged out of "you belong to the person who left us that we cant get over" in the most superficial and one sided way, then there is no way to address spinel's neglect, and the diamond abuse of pink.
Of which spinel's neglect is a direct result of.
You see where im going with this right??
These characters deserve to heal absolutely, they deserve to better themselves, but I dont believe it should be in this way, because the diamonds cant relate to any deep seeded rage spinel might hold towards pink, and spinel probably wont take kindly to finding out that the diamonds abuse of pink caused her to abandon her in the first place.
The four of them are far too young in their trauma to work that out in a healthy and nonviolent manner. After all, its 6,000 years of trauma in comparison of two years of healing and bettering and one singular day of intense spiralling memory repression, memory recovering and subsequent spiraling..again.
