Today we pay honor to one of the original purveyors of funk and soul music, Joseph Brown (May 3, 1933 – December 25, 2006) was a singer, songwriter, dancer, musician, record producer, and bandleader. Brown is considered one of the originators of funk in a career that lasted 50 years Brown got his start as a gospel singer he joined the r&b group The Gospel Starlighters. That eventually became the Famous Flames that was founded by Bobby Byrd and became the lead vocalist. In 1950, he gained notoriety to the public as a member of the Famous Flames with their ballads the group later became his backing band known as the James Brown Band they were known for the hit ballads, “Please, Please, Please” and “ Try Me” the group capitalized on Brown’s reputation as a tireless live performer. His success continued in the 1960s after his now-infamous live album Live at the Apollo had a number of hit songs. During the ’70s Brown's sound moved into what was the early stages of funk music. He was noted with the song “ Say It Loud” that had a social commentary that In 2013, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I should slip on my James Brown but, now it’s too big and I’m not going anywhere. He helped make the shape and refine several genres of music. I was working my first Christmas shift back in 2006 and around 2 am a news report came in that he had passed away. He will be remembered as the “ hardest working man in show business” with the ability to dance, sing, and act. James Brown is one of the most influential artists in music and was a fantastic entertainer.

Beau Dollar - I’m Ready, I’m Ready (I Got Me Some Soul) (1969)

Born William Hargis Bowman Jr. in Ohio, vocalist and drummer Beau Dollar is best known as a member of the white funk group the Dapps, and for playing with James Brown (most notably on I Can’t Stand Myself When You Touch Me). On this track, I’m more reminded of Creedence Clearwater Revival.
