i think since this is a prevalent piece in yue’s lore , so i need to talk about the dead current and how it works.
at its core, the dead current is a cursed underflow moving beneath all living seas — not a normal tide, but a spiritual one made from what the water was never meant to keep for so long. it began, as a wound in the natural order: the grief of shipwrecks, drowned cities, broken vows, ritual deaths, unfinished burials, and lost souls gathering over generations until remembrance itself curdled into something sentient. the sea is meant to hold memory, but not endlessly, and not without mercy. the dead current is what happens when memory has nowhere to go and sorrow is left to sink too deep for too long.
it does not move like ordinary water. it does not answer to moon, wind, or season, but to death, imbalance, and accumulated grief. it spreads through spiritually weakened waters first — old battle coasts, sacrificial sites, ruined shrines, burial trenches, ship graveyards, and places where divine law or sacred rite have broken down. from there, it infects surrounding tides, creating wrong currents, unnatural stillness, blackwater blooms, and rift current tears where the boundary between the living sea and the abyss begins to split open.
