Watching ‘The Way’ and trying really hard to see the apparent “romance” between Gabrielle and Eli that Renee O’Connor and Timothy Odmundson said they portrayed and I still don’t see it. I don’t see anything.
I think maybe it’s because the writers didn’t embrace that. What Renee and Tim did was just improvisation and the reason why that can be immediately picked up with Lucy and Renee is because the writing supports it.
The writing does not support Gabrielle and Eli as a romantic pairing whatsoever. It’s just something Renee and Tim decided to try whilst filming their scenes.
And yeah, it just does not come across at all that way to me. I can see that there’s an affinity there. A reverence. But there’s nothing even remotely romantic about that.
I honestly don’t even know what I’m looking for or when I’m supposed to see it because I don’t see anything.
Does anyone else see it? Maybe some straight person that does not ship Xena and Gabrielle whatsoever and would more than likely think any het pairing is romantic.
Is it just me being so queer that I don’t see anything?
Lucy and Renee talk about this in the commentary for ‘Ides Of March’ and they laugh about how obvious it is…. But like…. I’m struggling to even see the subtext.
I think this just goes to show how much I need the writing to coincide with the acting for me to see it.
The writing supports a dynamic of a mentorship but it does not support a dynamic of a romance. Not at all.
In comparison, watching the dynamic between Lao Ma and Xena in ‘The Debt’ which also is a mentorship, you can see it very easily that it’s also a romantic dynamic because the writing supports the portrayal of it as that. There’s dialogue that even directly acknowledges that.
xena telling gabrielle about lao ma and telling her it's a love story !!!
