What is a ghost? A tragedy condemned to repeat itself time and again? An instant of pain, perhaps. Something dead which still seems to be alive. An emotion suspended in time. Like a blurred photograph. Like an insect trapped in amber. A ghost is me.
The Devil's Backbone (2001) dir. Guillermo del Toro
i am not a auteur boot licker i, am not a film bro who sucks at the toes of tarantino, i couldnt care less about scorsese or kubrick or whatever fuckboy de jour is making films.
but del toro. he is my weakness. i see how much he believes in his art, and the people around him's art. that's important. he has so much faith in the artistry of others to perfect and elevate his vision. i do not think he has made a bad film.

totally now making the headcanon that the creature has been in all of Del Toro's movies, just in the background.
yeah, have him be Ofelia's best friend who she played in the woods with. yeah, he rescued Eliza from the river as a baby. He was Edith's mysterious pen pal. He helped Carlos, Jaime and the other orphans. he met Pinocchio. he was watching with popcorn while the Jaegers beat the Kaijus to a pulp. He and Hellboy are pals.
The Devil's Backbone (Guillermo del Toro , 2001)
I saw someone mention The Orphanage as being directed by Guillermo del Toro, which is close! (I was confused by this too when I was researching) I don't think he directed it, but he produced it! He did direct a different film, also about a haunted orphanage: The Devil's Backbone (2001). here's Erik and Tomás playing Uno with Santi, the ghost boy from that movie.
