Hi! I hope you are well! So happy to find another Devil's Crown enjoyer! I was wondering what were your thoughts on the Philip and Richard relationship in The Devil's Crown? The mill scenes and its bangers lines ("No! You're Philip and I'm Richard, no perhaps!" "I'll do anything you want. No, I'l’ do anything I want for you which is a great deal more."). But then it feels like they mostly dropped it and I was disappointed.

Yeah it's surprising they didn't go as much into their relationship....it's interesting when watching it gave off the vibes that Philip just was putting up with him the whole time, being nice in public but kind of repulsed in private. (Wild we get a kiss and it's extremely perfunctory, and not even the best m/m kiss in the series lmao) It's interesting because Philip has some mad chemistry with the scenes with John later and kind of hints at being attracted to Young Henry and Geoffrey too. I guess it sort of follows the historical timeline of cozying up to Richard before he was king and when Richard had to rely on him as a tool against Henry, but once Henry is in the ground there's more of a division between them.

Richard's characterization in TDC is so fascinating to me because I think it kind of goes in its own direction of awkward queer transgender gnostic angst that is like, entirely Made Up while still sticking very close to the historical timeline events. (Many thoughts about this) We spend a lot of time during his arc in his head and we don't get as much of Philip, who remains more of a peripheral character. Somehow Richard ends up having a lot more gay scenes with literally every other character (Bertran de Born, all those other brunette twinks, Emperor Henry VI, the self degrading daddy issues dream) it's definitely unique, even if not really how I would characterize him.

I do think the Philip and Richard scenes, especially the mill scene, kind of shows off their differences in an interesting way by painting Richard as more of a zealot vs. Philip's wary pragmatism, but there is surprisingly little chemistry between them. I always wonder whether this was a deliberate choice of contrast or idk just how things turned out. TDC Richard just comes across painfully awkward and struggling to connect and understand people in general in many of the scenes, not just sexually/romantically but definitely without the smooth charisma that Henry and John have in their arcs. I think Bertran is the character that seemed to "get" him the most in the series, and is the one to question him directly about himself in an honest way.
