5 Favorite Bela Lugosi performances

I have realized in my lists I have neglected Bela Lugosi ,which is a shame that I am correcting .While not one of my personal favorites I have an admiration for Lugosi ,he has a hypnotic quality to him,and he always gives it his all

Dr. Richard Vollin from The Raven (1935)

Lugosi plays Vollin, a surgeon who is obsessed with the works of Edgar Allan Poe, and a patient he saved ,and when her father discourages the affair,Vollin goes mad and plans revenge .Now this movie is fine,it just reminds me a lot of a film that came out the same year ,Mad Love which is also about a surgeon with macabre interests who goes mad due to obsession with a woman,and between the two I like Mad Love more ,cause the descent into madness is more gradual .That said the Raven has it’s high points ,and that is Lugosi himself .He’s a mad genius who feels he is justified in his horrible deeds,even disfiguring a man to force him to be his servent.He reallly is the best part of the film

Dr. Vitus Werdegast as The Black Cat (1934)

My favorite film Lugosi did,and it’s awesome cause he is the HERO .He has spent 15 years in a prision camp and returns to take revenge on Poelzig (Played by Boris Karloff ) who is not only responsible for Werdegast’s imprsionment ,but married Lugosi’s wife,killed her,perserved her body ,and unknown to Werdegast married his daughter as well .And Werdegast seeks to kill Poelzig he must also protect a young couple from Poelzig .What I like about this film is how while Lugosi is the hero ,he is a bit unhinged ,due to all the crap he’s gone through ,in contrast to the more composed Poelzig ,Werdegast is almost a 30′s version of Dr Loomis from Halloween .I also think this is the best team up Karloff and Lugosi ever had

"Murder" Legendre from White Zombie (1932)

Soooooo I dont like this movie .I love the feel of it but I couldnt really follow the plot .....But the best thing about it is Bela Lugosi as voodoo master Murder Legrande,he is so mesmerizing I recommend the film just for him

Count Dracula from Dracula (1931)

The most iconic cinematic vampire .Like what hasnt been said about this performance.He’s suave ,he is enigmatic ,he is the embodiment of “Evil is cool “ .Like this movie is nearly 90 years old and yet he is still undeniably cool .Kinski is melancholy,Schreck is horrifying ,Oldman is romantic , Lee is primal , Lugosi is just plain cool

The Son of Frankenstein (1939)

While The Black Cat maybe my favorite Lugosi movie ,Ygor is my favorite Lugosi performance .He is terrifying ,manipulating the monster into carrying out murders .Lugosi is unrecognizable not just cause of his makeup but due to his body language and even his voice and way of talking .It is Lugosi at his scariest

I just watched Count Dracula (from real life) kill Fred Flintstones and it was so so so so so so scary I think we should abolish the moving picture as it can create horrors beyond our own reality
