I've been working my way through the audiobooks of The Last Kingdom while I'm at work, and finished The Pagan Lord (book 7) this morning.

The final chapter, the one in which Uhtred faces Cnut, was probably the best of the book series so far. I couldn't breathe at the end of it, and if I had been reading it as a new release, I would have been super scared for Uhtred.

This was only compounded by the opening chapter of The Empty Throne, which is told from Uhtred's youngest son's perspective.

Cornwell is a genius for those two chapters.

Just read all of the empty throne and like. There are really so many good characters in this book. Eadith is lowkey the best despite LITERALLY STABBING UHTRED (to heal him. Gotta drain that wound babey and there’s no better way to do it than stabbing with a longsword). Also I’m in love with sigtryggr and stiorra 😔 being bisexual is a curse. Not a lot of osferth, which sucks, but there was a TON of uhtred jr being a badass. I’m so proud of him. Also a lot of finan being like ‘no lord you can’t fight, you’re still hurt’ and I deeply respect that gay lover ‘we are bound’ type energy from him. Aethelstan is still a 9 year old pain in the ass and I love him. Uhhh overall like 8/10 sihtric was barely there and aethelflaed is really mean to her daughter but uhtred no longer has a year old open wound so win some lose some I guess
