Ray is from Edmonton originally, he’s in a band with my friend Garrett called The Famines!
That’s an awesome coincidence :) I’m going to listen to his tunes during the week. Did he realize some illustrations about your shared hometown?

Here's the kind of filth you can look forward to on tonight's episode of CITY SLANG. We've got THE FAMINES ON THE SHOW!
Sometimes it's hard to let go. 2012 was a fantastic year for music, and we haven't had enough time to talk about and appreciate it all. This small Favourites of '12 series is meant to remedy that.
I've had the great fortune of witnessing some of the best live music Canada (and beyond) has to offer over 2012. My deepest thanks to the wonderful artists and promoters who get me into these shows so I can tell you about them. And to my wallet for getting me into the rest.
The complete list of shows I attended in 2012, if you're interested.
A show would have to be pretty magical to shake the Sappy hold on my heart, and as I browse through photos of Fucked Up and reminisce over the wide grins of The Mouthbreathers, I'm transported back to that hazy, hot August long weekend. Click through the title for my Sappyfest festival recap.
Some runners-up:
Leonard Cohen at Colisée Pepsi, Quebec -- our poet laureate of love, sex, religion, and death jogged on and off stage, and in between those jogs, he played for 3+ hours. Yeah, that's pretty impressive.
The Famines, Yellowteeth, Maiden Names at ReNeu Boutique, Fredericton (link) - three unabashedly guitar-worshipping garage bands play in a consignment store to a crowd of 20. And I still wanted to crowd surf.
Colin Stetson at Festival International de Jazz de Montréal (review) - music is always physical, and sometimes it's a beast you have to beat back into the instrument when it's trying to escape and wreak favoc. Thanks to Stetson, I'm alive to tell the tale. "In short, holy shit."
Have you ever left a show rubbing your eyes after seeing a band for the first time, pretty damn sure that you just witnessed something brilliant? That was my impression after catching Edmonton/Montreal garage noise duo The Famines last spring at Vancouver's Wyrd Fest. Yet, it was such a fleeting moment, with their short set of maybe 4 songs. And without a full-length album and only cassette tapes to sell, the band seemed to be a mirage.
And then they reappeared. These guys will be stopping by Fredericton October 23 on a ON/QC/NB/PE jaunt, celebrating the re-issue of a 2008 live recording to cassette, which is accompanied by a 268-page book of liner notes, all designed and laid out by singer/guitarist Raymond Beisinger. Whether you're impressed, flabbergasted, or indifferent to their sheer dedication to DIY, let the music convince you. Stream "Faux Famous" from their Complete Collected Singles 2008-2011 LP above.
Fredericton, you're in for a treat. Locals Maiden Names and Yellowteeth will prove to be fantastic openers for The Famines, with the former hinting at the psychedelic rock of Black Mountain, and the latter's garage punk bragging some of the most wicked guitar licks in Atlantic Canada. Check out the event RSVP, and we'll see you there.
