I am streaming Dan Mangan’s latest album, and thinking about the Scripture quote, “no prophet is accepted in his hometown” (Luke 4:24). I am thinking of how we take for granted the familiar, the constant, the given. I am thinking of Mangan’s stout-like voice warning of cynical things, of hopeful things, like a canary in a mine, like pointing out fireworks. I am thinking of Canadian artists getting accolades in Europe and the United States before returning to their homelands. The prodigal father-land. I am thinking of all of these things because I had taken Dan Mangan as a given, because I found his album streaming on NPR, and because this album is not trite. Not in the least.
Last night’s show: Gord Downie, the Sadies, and the Conquering Sun.
Gord Downie was equal parts cocky gunslinger and slack line navigator, the Sadies a freight train of munitions. And as the band chugged along faithfully, flawlessly, (dangerously), Downie sauntered, drunkenly, down its spine with weapons drawn. Who was his pursuer? Who was he pursuing? As the tracks disappear into the golden horizon, I can no longer recall.
Tl;dr: $50 for a ticket and a beer but still worth it I guess grumble grumble/10 (at The Marquee Ballroom)
Hello again, it's been a while. How's yer ma?
I made a mix inspired by jealousy and the frenzied monster it makes us. "When you wake what is it that you think of most? When your bed is empty do you really sleep alone? If I imagine you, body next to another"
Listen to Fucked Up’s new album Glass Boys in its entirety via Pitchfork Advance.
Indeed, everything Romano, Romano, Burton, and Kehoe touch turns to gold—but before they fractured outwards, there was AiB. And this is our tribute to them.
Friends.

Thinking of Devon today. 4 year have passed since our last show with you. We still love you and miss you
Frankie Knuckles died today and I hope he gets the tribute he deserves. My relationship with electronic music began with artists like Bjork and NIN who always maintained a certain pop element in their songs that allowed for mainstream success, which I guess is how I knew about them and didn’t...
This is the tribute Frankie Knuckles deserves.
