The truth is, a lot of time we judge people without even thinking twice before doing it. We judge people for doing things differently, forgetting that we don't have all the facts. We shouldn't be too quick to judge others, because things are not always as they appear. Always keep in mind that thoughts are not facts. What you think is happening and what is really happening can be quite different, especially if you are not directly involved. We should learn to slow down because when we slow down, we can be thoughtful. Little Book Review: The Five Sisters

Author: Margaret Mahy.

Publication Date: 1997.

Genre: Children's fantasy.

Premise: On a lazy summer afternoon, a grandmother makes a paper doll chain for her granddaughter and draws the first doll's features in red pen. Before she can draw any more, though, a bird carries the dolls away. As the dolls travel from owner to owner, their personalities develop and they have various whimsical adventures.

Thoughts: I was a big fan of miniatures and dolls as a kid, spending hours decorating dollhouses and cutting out Tom Tierney paper dolls while watching TV. I was naturally drawn to the small sub-genre of children's fantasy involving doll characters, although most of these were too young for me by the time I had the patience and hand dexterity to cut my way through a whole Polly Pratt book. The Five Sisters, which I checked out from the library in fifth grade, was a little more sophisticated than average. It lacked the wry humor of Hitty: the First Hundred Years or the baffling horror of Among the Dolls, but it had more to think about than The Doll People or The Picolinis.

The five sisters all have distinct strengths and interests: Alpha is a leader, Cathabelle is a storyteller, Elodie is melancholy and poetic, Icasia has a thirst for knowledge, and Zamira is a comedian. On a surface level, Mahy is showing that people who are different from each other can get along and have much to contribute; however, she also demonstrates that there are many ways to derive pleasure from life. It's an unexpectedly philosophical children's book about joy, and the illustrations (by Patricia McCarthy) are beautifully textured.

Some of the whimsy feels overdone. Most notably, Alpha and Cathabelle take up residence on a bookshelf and run afoul of a pompous pig statuette who happens to be a wizard (named Magico-Porkus). Their lower-key antagonists--birds, wind, the caprices of humans--fit the vibe much better.

Hot Goodreads Take: It would be pretty funny if someone really hated this adorable book, but the worst anyone says is that the characters don't have much depth. Because they're made out of paper!!!
