You’d never known your father; your mother and her sisters sometimes described him as a wandering merchant. In other stories he was a wounded soldier that had been passing through their woods. In every case, the core of the story remained the same: he had been around your mother for a time, and then he left before you were born. He wasn’t here, and you did not know him. The trees replaced a father figure; they were old and wise and had their lessons once you learned how to listen. The birds in their canopies, the tired bears crawling out of their den - this had to be how the world turned. You were hardly a child anymore by the time you saw a village with its towers dedicated to grain that you mistook for a castle. The city was another wonder, another mystery. You asked yourself at every turn if the man who’d never stuck around was among the faces in this crowd. The air rushed differently through the leaves than it did across the market; the clink of silver didn’t provide the same thrill as the veins that pumped beneath the ground. Bakers didn’t give away anything for free, but that didn’t stop you from starting to trace the lines around their discontent for anything that seemed familiar. He wasn’t here, and maybe you’d never find him, but just because the woods were behind you doesn’t mean they didn’t still live inside of you. Your mother told you that you had a choice: immortality in the light or mortality amidst those who had forgotten how to listen to the wind.
