I think the Mechanisms are sorta beyond gender. They don't really care about anything, so why would they care about gender? I think they either go with the gender that they think is funniest, or the gender that's the easiest. If you do like the mechanisms and trans people tho, there's this great fic called The Walls Begin To Tear by Stargazer_Lillies on AO3 you should read
