THE HEMLOFT designed and built by Joel Allen / more | s&thi instagram etc.
Some people make a conscious decision to buck the American standard of living and shoehorn their lives into a tiny home. It didn’t happen to me that way. I ended up building a small home through a series of bizarre circumstances. I started off with a career in Software development at the age of 23. By 26 I had saved some money and I attempted a retirement stunt that went sideways, leaving me penniless. That’s when I began living out of my car and decided that instead of returning to software, I would test my aptitude as a carpenter.
While living out of my car I discovered that I quite liked the sport of compact living. I was in Whistler at the time and although I didn’t own a home, I enjoyed one of the biggest backyards in the world. I even began sleeping outdoors and got a kick out of finding places where no one else had slept before.

The official ad the the HemLoft that will be posted on Craigslist: The HemLoft is a secret treehouse, hiding in the woods of Whistler. If you are not already familiar, you can learn more here: http://hemloft.com/. I was fortunate in being able to acquired the materials I needed to build the HemLoft for free from Craigslist, and so I am now returning the HemLoft to Craigslist for free! It will be taken down and passed on to the recipient as a disassembled DIY package. The beneficiary will be responsible for helping with the removal of the HemLoft (with my guidance), providing transportation from the site to its final destination, and reassembling it on their own. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED: Please email to me: - A photo/description of your new legal (i.e. not on crown land again.. hehe) home for the HemLoft and its surroundings. It is critical that you have a tree (or substitute) very close to two feet in diameter. - A short write up describing why you want or deserve the HemLoft. - Your guarantee that you can provide a crew to help disassemble and transport the HemLoft to its new location on April 20th and 21st. Keep in mind that the ribs are over sixteen feet long - don’t be like me and try to fit a rib into your car or truck. Also note that the terrain around the HemLoft is steep potentially slippery. It will require fit individuals who are not easily daunted. A decision will be made within the next few days based on how well your pitch captures the spirit of the HemLoft. All proposals will be subject to posting on http://thehemloft.com/. Creative or entertaining proposals are encouraged : ) Sincerely, Joel Allen, Creator of the HemLoft

Former Canadian software developer and current carpenter Joel Allen built a unique egg-shaped tree house, The Hemloft. It is located in the woods near Whistler, British Columbia. The exact location of the house is a secret though, because Allen built it on Crown lands – government property – without permission.
Omigosh. This is such a cool story. And a gorgeous feat of architectural bravery. Joel Allen is definitely living his bonus life.
To win my heart, build me a treehouse. Or at least take me to one for the evening.
