I have a problem with people comparing Daenerys to these characters (whom I love). Because she's not an anti-heroine. She's a true heroine. In the books, she doesn't fall in the dark side, and there's no indication that she ever will. And in the show, it happened because they didn't know what to write.

Plus, on the TikTok I stumbled upon, people were saying they wanted to destroy the world and that if you didn't understand that, you misunderstood the works.

What the hell?

In the show, Daenerys was seized by a random fit of madness. Paul is simply carrying out a revenge to regain his position and initially didn't want to use the Fremen people, and besides, he knows the history of the Golden Path, even though he refused responsibility for it. Anakin is just participating in the control of the galaxy, after being manipulated by Palpatine. And Eren, initially, didn't want to destroy the world. He pored over countless scenarios before realizing there was only one where his friends would live, and that was the only thing he wanted.

Paul and Eren, despite making choices, were caught in the web of fate and became anti-heroes. Anakin, on the other hand, was manipulated and spiraled into villainy. Daenerys was poorly written.

And the Daenerys of the books has nothing to do with these three characters. Except for Anakin. Because just as the prophecy that Daenerys is the chosen one is true, well, Anakin is also the true chosen one of his prophecy.

The Heroes vs Red Country: Books in Conversation

I finished Red Country, and while I think both books are a not as good as Best Served Cold, I think they exceed BSC when you kinda take them as a mirror to each other.

The Heroes questions Heroism, it questions the culture, and the cycles of violence that it perputuates and creates it. The whole book, just tells you "these murderers are no Heroes, heroes aren't real." All characters, except for 1 or 2, fail to see that the culture that tells them to die and to kill, is toxic. I think literally one character turns away in the end. It doesn't matter that even the "Good People" in the book can't escape being trapped in it.

Then Red Country comes in and shows you, what people can be without the toxic culture. And Temple is a perfect character for that. This man, removed from the culture perpetuated by the Mecenary life, actually managed to live a good life. Hell, even Logen/Lamb who is followed by his past, was able to do Good when Good people were around him.

And, I think that's the combined statement of these two books. People can change for the better, but only when the society and the culture around you allows for it. Away from the pressures and expectations of culture, maybe, more people can become good.

Then again as Cosca, the very epitome imo of the toxic culture that dominates the First Law series, says. Culture is coming for you. Your sacred spaces, your edge of the maps where dragons lay. Culture is coming.

Then again, Cosca did get killed by two people he underestimated. A Lawyer and a Writer. The forces of Law and Propaganda killing the old culture of Warriors and Kings. Kind of a fitting, but still pathetic end for it.

Maybe the Culture that can come out of this could be good. Although, it symbolically beginning with a murder of an old, pathetic, but still violent, man bodes ill for the future huh?
