ATTENTION FOLLOWERS
this is to officially announce the creation of a new blog, THE HOLY LANCE, founded and authored by myself and my good friend jane and dedicated to the production and dissemination of thinking as sharp as a spear, writing as taut as a trampoline, insight as hot and bright as a halogen lightbulb, and truth as deep as the mariana trench. our words are like needles, our sentences are like lightning bolts, our paragraphs are like brick walls, and our aim is to recover the absent heart of the universe. to you who feel dead, we will bring you back to life; to you for whom the world has grown empty and meaningless, we will transfigure it; to you who feel that you've reached the end of the line, that everything has been done and life is over, we will show you that this is only the beginning.
everything up to this point has been a dress rehearsal. but now it's opening night, the audience have taken their seats, the lights are starting to dim, and in a moment you will step onto the stage and play—this time for real—the role you've been learning and practicing since before you can remember. but something's wrong. you've been waiting in the wings for so long that now you can't remember your lines. you can't even remember what the play was about. you aren't even sure if you're wearing the right costume. if you step out now, you're sure you'll say the wrong thing, or freeze. the audience will boo you off the stage and it will all have been for nothing.
if that is how you feel, then maybe we can help. we think we might remember what the play was about. it's only a vague memory, but the more we think about it, the more it comes back to us. please let us share our findings.
THE HOLY LANCE is on wordpress, and will be on tumblr as well soon enough. read it and tell your friends about it. thanks!
the parsifal desire
our belief in the magic bullet is unshakeable. we know it's got to be out there somewhere, that one thing that will make everything okay, forever. the twists and folds of life all gather to a point—one must find the point and take hold of it.
what would it be? as an adolescent i always imagined it as some set of words, like an incantation. whatever force was holding me back, i knew it had to be inside me. if it was interior, i reasoned it would have to be defeated by interior means—thinking the perfect thought, speaking in solitude the perfect utterance—the one sentence, the one word, in which all of life is condensed, like a captive spirit.
the right array of words gathers to a point, and that point is the diamond tip of the holy lance, that pierced christ on the cross, that wounded amfortas—the spear that stabbed us all. we try to scratch off holes as if they were scabs—but only the touch of the lance will fill them.
